Roundabouts on unmarked intersections,+ speedo check

Which path is the better to take? blue or red?

I think if it is marked you have to stay to the centre and follow approximately the blue path. but this question is about unmarked intersections.

Also do you know how often you should check your speedo? I find I get stuck staring at it too much.

The right lane is for going straight and turning right. The left lane is for turning left and going straight.

The left lane is not for turning right. The right lane is not for turning left.

u mean the left part of the lane and the right part of the lane assuming this is just like a small intersection not a main road. so the blue is the path to take?

Should you move lane to avoid people entering a motorway if it is safe to do so and no-one in the right lane?

Yep the blue is the path to take. The red line shouldnt go all the way around the roundabout. It should only turn left and go straight through.

You should treat all round abouts the same.

Ler, recommend you read your road rules for your state regarding the roundabouts. If you still have trouble, I recommend you talk to the traffic authority, or your instructor. It is easier to explain in person rather than on a forum.

Glance at your speedo every time you do a mirror check - that's how I was taught (aaaaaall those years ago ... !!)

I got the book and can download it but obviously it is not possible to publish every scenario in a book or online.

With the merging thing, the rules say the red has to give way to the blue. Common(?) courtesy says move to the right if its not busy to let the red car merge.
I find myself on the highway near my place I'll stay out of the left lane near points where I know people merge. I do it also for my own safety as people take a lot of risks when they pull out at those points.

qld. The only rule i know with regard to merging is that whoever is in front has right of way.

i didn't know you had to indicate left when exiting roundabout in qld until recently... i never did but seen a lot of drivers do it in qld.

I would indicate after the blue line. Just curious, didn't your driving instructor teach you all this? If not, perhaps its time you got another instructor. I'm not trying to have a go at you but if your instructor isn't teaching you the basics, then they really aren't teaching you much at all.

One of the few that do it. Good on you. 99% of people here in ACT don't (I'm in the other 1% category).

In theory the indicating when leaving roundabouts is a good idea but in practice I find that most people have NFI and indicate incorrectly (ie put their RH blinker on) nearly causing accidents.

Yes, most people have NFI on how to indicate, or don't indicate at all and turn left or right.

Sort of like, "Guess which way I'm going?"

At roundabouts I try not to look at indicators, it doesnt mean at all which way they'll go. I concentrate on the vehicle itself, which way its actually going.

Yes, that is the law here in Vic, as written in their website. However in the town I live the council have painted arrows in the lanes coming up to the roundabouts enabling vehicles to turn right from LH lanes at some roundabouts, turn left from the RH lane at other roundabouts, they have no idea on what chaos they cause. And wonder why there are so many accidents at these roundabouts.

Better you pay the 40 bucks now instead of forking out 500 bucks in the excess for your impending insurance claim later on because you have no clue how the road rules function. 40 bucks spent now could also save you from the potential fist to your head when you damage someone's pride and joy by driving like an idiot.
