I had some classical singing training during uni and used to play clarinet and saxophone when I was younger. Owned an alto sax but played the schools tenor sax in jazz and senior bands in high school. When I was 17 I sold my sax to buy a car stereo...regretted it ever since!

I've messed around with writing and recording some of my own songs since I was in high school. I've got what I would consider a fairly nice amateur home recording setup. I don't actually own any guitar or bass amps these days, I record using an Avid Eleven Rack - these things are epic! It emulates different amps, cabs, mics etc and makes recording electric guitar at home so much easier (and much better sounding) than trying to mic up an amp and cab setup.

May not be anyone's cup of tea, but someone above mentioned posting audio links, so here's the latest song I wrote and recorded. I apologise for the bass and drums, I'm a terrible bass player and the drums are a program.

Wow, that's awesome man, I loved that. Having met you, I pretty much spent 4 minutes in disbelief that sound come out of your face, unbelievable!

Seriously man, wow

Maybe we do need to lay down some tracks after all. I could be the bad musician with the good gear in the background... Hahaha

Came on here to say I play guitar and bass, but wow, who cares now right?!

As you were

Hahaha thanks man, I think?

Yeah man, I feel we didn't really get to chat too much about the music side of things when I was there, given I was running late and had to dash off. Would be good to have a play around at some point.

I learnt classical piano since I was young until high school. I reached grade 3 from memory but stopped when my family moved from the Gold Coast. When I was younger I enjoyed it more, but I was starting to lose interest and just wanted to be outside and body board instead of practicing. Nowadays, I still hit the keys a bit and can still play the first few bars of the last song I was learning but don't play much anymore. I can read music, but it takes me a while to work out the notes nowadays.

Took up the drum kit mid-way through high-school (fairly easily given my paino experience) and did a year of lessons to give me basic limb independency. Self taught advanced beats and techniques and played twice every Sunday during church services for many years. I still bash a beat occasionally, but don't really have anyone to jam with anymore. I only have a basic starter kit at home and not a full set of cymbals.

I keep a lookout every now and then for more gear and I would love to get my hands on a pearl export kit and full set of cymbals. But my XA hardtop keeps stealing my money..

graphicgoose - that's really well done. My tastes are pretty eclectic lately focusing on symphonic metal, but you've got a really good voice and sound IMO. That song is great! and I'd buy that song. Be encouraged and keep at it!

I recorded this instrumental track (about 18 months ago) for a friend who plays WW2 themed PC games.

I may include this song, with vocals on an upcoming EP but atm I have too much material to choose from.

That is a great piece that suits the wargaming genre. What was the guitar used XG Falcon?

Off topic, some of that footage was new to me and was interesting to watch...

I used an Epiphone Les Paul 100 with Epiphone SG-400 pick ups.

The video is really awesome, he found some great clips which I had never seen either.

Yes, I play many instruments. Guitar, Bass, Drums, Piano/Keyboard, Banjo, Cigar box guitar etc. Professionally trained on Bass, the others i learnt how to play from other muso's.
Also did 80% of my qualifications in Audio engineering and technical production (recording mixing and setting up and running live shows), Although before being able to finish my qualification I had to put it on hold due to some extreme personal circumstance's, and now 7 or 8 years later I still havent gotten back to it.

I do however still pickup my guitars from time to time. Lucky enough that the bloke I run my business with is a drummer, so every now and again after work we will head back to my place and jam.

I always loved playing blues and jazz the best. It always gave me a good tingley feeling when playing.

In the interest of playing more guitar, I sourced and ordered a kit for a 12 string semi-acoustic guitar. It took about 10 weeks for it to arrive...

For the last two weeks I've been colouring the body and neck, today I finished the colour on the body. I've got a few weeks before I'll get this one finished!

I'm looking forward to playing this once it's finished!

Been playing guitar for 11 or so years. Been writing my own stuff for a long time. Here's my latest 2 offerings. Both recorded at home on my 7-string esp baritone

Drums were done with toontrack samples and hours of editing. Enjoy.

Looks sweet - nice job on the finish!

May I ask where you sourced it from? online? do you have a link?

How did the neck travel? Did it arrive in good condition? (straight/no twist)

Thanks! I found a place in Perth, Pitbull guitars (Pitbullguitars.com). They have the kits made in China, and most kits are shipped from Perth. In my case it was a special order and got airmailed direct from China. It was all well packed with lots of styrofoam packing, so far there has been no issues with twists or bends.

Thanks for listening and commenting, I'm glad you enjoyed it. More songs are coming - I just haven't had a chance to record since the weekend.

Get something like this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rode-NT-U...wAAOSwLVZViP-4

Unfortunately you will get bad quality from plugging a mic directly into the mic port of your pc.

Default Re: Do you Play a musical instrument ?

Aldi had a special on instruments the other week, and among the guitars and violins (which I already have many of), they had a beginners flute, so I picked one up. I played around with one in orchestra rehearsals as a teen, but will watch some youtube tutorials to see if I can get into it now.

I learned violin in high school and started my AMEB certificates, but had to stop when I got to year 12, to concentrate on studies (fat lot of good that did me). I played in my school orchestra for a few years as well, and would love to get back to that kind of thing, as that's what I really enjoy.

Then I found a cello for sale pretty cheap on ebay, and started to teach myself to play that, since (I thought) the theory isn't too different to violin.

I also have an old Japanese electric guitar that was given to Dad by a friend in the 70's, but since it needs an overhaul, I bought an Epiphone Les Paul in Silverburst a couple of years back to fiddle around with. I admit to being confused by too many strings... I'm good at chords, but can't efficiently change between them to save myself.

At the same time as I was in the shop buying that, Dad found an electric bass that he didn't mind, traded in, and in need of work, so he grabbed that, and it's now in my room.

Also in the house is my Great-Grandmother's piano, which is in mint condition, and my Grandmother's pianola, which needs some refurbishment. She pulled it apart and re-tubed it while my Grandfather was off serving in the army, but it's all perished again. We also have the rolls for it, but I don't know what kind of condition they are in now, after years in a crate at work.

tl;dr: Play violin/cello, attempting flute and guitar

Own: 4 x violins, 2 x guitars, 1 x bass, 1 x cello, 1 x flute, 1 x piano, 1 x pianola.

When I turned 40 I went and bought myself a drum kit, a Yamaha Stage Custom. Always wanted one, but wasn't allowed as a kid and never had the room or the means to get one earlier, with family commitments etc. I just bash around on it regularly, but I'm no Buddy Rich, Dave Grohl, Dave Lombardo etc etc.
My son ,who was 9 when I got it, was already having guitar lessons took to it like a duck to water. He plays the kit most days and can really play well. Shames me.....lol.
Here he is a couple of years ago.

I learned how to bang a few chords out on guitar when I was a teenager but rarely played with others.

My 13 y/o daughter is learning at a fearsome rate on a semi acoustic purchased from Aldi a couple of years ago. She turns 14 in October, a US built strat and roland cube amp await her.
