ok i might have a test drive this arvo, i have narrowed my BA XR8's down to 2, both 2005 MK2's both 6sp manual, same km's but 1 is a bit rough around the edges and is $10k and the other is at a dealer and has been detailed for $12k.

test drove the rx8 and it was horrible, too stiff in the rear and i think something was lose in there too, had plenty of go but i did almost 80km/h and was still in 1st gear so the ratios are not practical.
had a quick look at a BA Mk1 XR6 turbo, 20's, 5speed, 280rwkw but i don't know it didn't do anything for me.
also made an offer on a 2003 GT auto, guy said i was close but he just couldn't go that low but he has had it forsale for a long time so he might call me back

Without going through all the posts, have you checked out your insurance for these cars? It won't be cheap!

I owned 2 BA GTPs (one in NZ and one here) and the 5 speed was awful. My favourite model was the BA mk2 and I still have it. The 6 speed is a huge improvement and the model still had the colour embroidered/stitched seats and other bits which have been dropped with each model. One thing I did was pick up a set of engraved FPV pedal covers as they got rid of those and went generic on the MK2 but never was able to find the scuff plates which were much nicer than the generic ones they used from then on.

Choose a colour that is one of the classic colours too. Black is tough looking but hard to keep paint looking wonderful. You know from the old school cars that some colours are more prestigious. I kept Rapid as loved the colour.

Good luck and go with what you want. Personally, your compassion is like comparing a mango to a potato. Drive the GTP sensibly and the brakes are not being replaced very 5 minutes - got 58,000kms out of my first lot (had done Pads but rotors were checked and not needed replacing) and only had to replace them once. Car now has 70,000kms. I use the gears to slow the car and plan to stop way off. Sometimes it is just management when you know what the replacement cost is!

Cheers
Gaela

I guess if you like the wine of the turbo, the rumble of the boss (windsor rumbles better, but im biased), then grab a small loan and grab the GS supercharged 5L. I will let you think on that..

Thats the way mate, if your budgeting on one of these cars, you don't want any nasty suprises after you purchase the car.
Since your 34 & if you feel comfortable enough doing it, increase your excess a little & it will bring down your premium substantially.

I have a 2005 GTP BA MK2 Modded, insured with Shannon's, agreed value $45K - yes, $45K for $80 a month. $960 a year. There is another modded one on their books same model as mine and modded for the same deal.

Is that for daily driven or limited use. Do you get your car inspected annually for that sum insured and does it have extremely low kays.

That's a very good deal by the way.

Mate I have my 2011 GTP through Wesfarmers for 75 grand & I pay $500 a year. I took a high excess to bring it to that level but for a car I don't drive very often, I 'll cop the $2000 excess if something did happen.

As you said your only going to keep for ten years or so. Just thinking pfnthe resale value. Obviously the GT will hold it more. End of the cycle you can always go turbo after if you really dont like the GT which i doubt.

I rarely drive it but they have not asked for proof of Kms at all but I am happy if they do. Must confess, I am not sure when I last drove it. Reckon the AFF drag Nats in June and that would be the only time in 12 months. I said it was not my daily (verbally) and they were happy with that.

Has 79,694 km on the clock but probably done a few hundred kms in the last 2 years.

I have been with them for years (also have my dog float with them) and they came back with bigger premiums and very low valuation so I shopped them. Lumleys are red hot for business and happy with modded cars as long as you can list everything, photograph the entire car etc. Shannon's matched the deal so I stayed. Will see what they do again next round but if it is stupid, I might move. Will see what happens. Hardly worth insuring it when I never drive it but we all know the "Sod's law"!

Be careful....I got into mine after not driving it for 6 weeks at 8pm on a Sat night and had a flat battery and no jump leads or road service membership. Very costly, so since invested in a staged charger which stays on the car permanently while its not used.

Noticed Gaela that you changed your pads at 58k....Mine goes in for a service next Tues and with 56k kms I suspect my brakes pads/rotors will need doing.

My $85 per month insurance with Ryno is on the proviso no more than 8,000kms a year travelled. It drops further if you travel below 5,000 so will take that next year considering I've only done 8,000 in 2 years on average

My car lives on a trickle charger suited for the purpose. If I drove it, it would really just be to an AFF event or a continuous trip up and back the Hume for a run. I also have a Full Membership with RACV fir any car I am driving. I do big kms in the Territory all over Australia with the dogs, so make sure I am covered in any emergency.

No - changed my rotors. I had changed my pads in between as the cost is very insignificant. Only on my first paid replacement set and I reckon the rears were just machined and are still the originals. So long ago, I forget! They love to flog you new stuff but if the rear rotors are fine machined, do so.

I think mine is the 5000 mark too but said I would be pushing to do 200 km a year.

Your premiums are only a bit more expensive than mine and I live Country however it was the agreed value I had issues with. Spent well over $30K on the car and for 20K I want to strip it out! They decided to give me the $45 and I walk away if written off. The risk to them is very low so win win all round.

whats a BA Mk1 GT auto worth with just under 200,000km on it?
and will a 290kw GT with an auto be on par with a 260kw XR8 with 6sp manual?
will the GT be a better drive? or would the manual XR8 be more rewarding?
I hated my Auto 220kw AU by the way, was doughy around town and only got going under hard acceleration.

Yeah agree, don't get the auto unless it's a BF onward. 4 sp auto doesn't suit the 5.4!

but a BA GT auto for $14k? I did find a manual BA1 GT-P for $19k but thats a little high at the moment $14k is my limit and that would be fine to get a nice BA2 manual XR8.
plus a $14k BA1 GT is not going to depeciate much if at all is it?

Can't imagine a BA GT going to much lower than 14! Would have been a $65,000 car in it's day. How many k's?

The thing is, the 14000 dollar GT could end up needing thousands spent on it to get it up to scratch. These cars are not cheap to repair by any means & even simple things cost $$$$. You might be better off spending a bit more to get a better car with lower kays.

But i do agree, you would think that you couldn't lose for14k.

Unless you whack in a high stall converter and some high ratio diff gears.
Cheaper to service and replace if required as well.
ZF is a brilliant BOX but it has its quirks and like the 4 speed - its is let down by the ridiculous decision to have the trans fluid routed through the radiator header tank for heat exchange. Bad news when the exchanger lets go and very $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Got a mate with 300,000 ks on a BA XR8 & the engine runs sweet as, doesn't use a drop of oil & the only trouble he had was the bushes or something in the rear end.
End of the day it sounds like you want a GT, remembering these things like a drink but what V8 doesn't, the insurance is dear but I,m sure you could halve what you have been quoted but at the end of the day you will own a GT Falcon.
Follow the heart!

That's the reason I bought a falcon with the 4 speed instead of a 6 speed. I wanted the 4 speed for servicing and replacement reasons. It goes fine with 4.1s in my Boss 260 anyway.
