I swear any little thing to have a go at Holden is taken.
The main difference, the old Festivas WERE made in Korea. They were basically a Kia Rio. They weren't good cars, build quality was poor, paint was bad, and don't get me started about their little bicycle tyres. The thing is, that was in the 1990's. That is all in the past. Now, instead they have the Fiesta, which is a European car (and with excellent quality). The Ford brand might have been cheapened in the past, but it certainly isn't now. They learnt from their mistakes and are now selling their cars for value, not price.

Just my 2c _2:
I agree - the salesman ads are lame at best, the ads for the performance models are basically non-existent. How are Ford/FPV going to convert new customers to the XR6T/Typhoon (who wouldnt even think of buying a Ford) if they dont advertise the damn things!

Edit - Oh and the VIVA ad is terrible, dont they also say something at the end like "Holden Viva is class leading" or words to that effect - false advertising if they havnt actually won any awards or outsold anyone i think

I swear any little thing to have a go at Holden is taken.
Difference is that this is just the tip of the iceberg for Holden. The way they are going financially, I'd say realistically that over 50% of all Holden models will be imported from Asia (read, Korea mainly and possibly China) within 5 years.

My question is how the hell do you get 22 storage spaces in that car?? I can't get that in my xb!!!!!!!!! Its another attempt at what i call 'annoying' advertising, the type of advert that gets stuck in your brain due to annoying 'catch phrases'

Actually, this thread wasnt just an excuse to have a go at Holden for whoever you are that suggested that. If you actually read the post, you would see what I said, that usually Holden are successful with their marketing and ads - and its not often you see a dodgy one, which is why I was surprised! Ive never picked on any of their ads, and anyway - if you have read ANY of my posts over the last year or so, you would know that Ive had plenty to say about Fords lack of advertising, and lack of quality advertising! I have always thought Fords ads were too few, and too crap. I even wrote to Polites (about another issue) and told him what I thought (and Flint) and I got responses from both!

So Im the first one to admit that Holden have it over Ford with marketing, and HSV over FPV. And Bathurst is a clear testament to that fact, I agree. In fact its not just tv - have a look at your local Motor Show and see who has the biggest and best set up! I know in Adelaide, the Holden stand absolutely smashes the Ford stand for attention grabbing ability! And merchandise is another area... you can get Holden and HSV gear nearly anywhere, at their dealers, at various department stores, just about everywhere... you have to struggle to find Ford/FPR gear, maybe out the back of the dealership stuffed in the parts area and maybe a bit of it at Kmart, but thats just Ford Racing gear and doesnt really compare to the Holden gear...

And as someone else said, how would anyone really know that a Typhoon exists? Ive never seen an ad for it, and I havent seen an FPV ad for a LOOONG time! Its disgraceful.

However, this is all why I was surprised to see the crappy little Viva ad which is so annoying it is sickening - and I didnt even mind the Skaife Holden ads either... but yes, the Korean connection is probably the reason... and I wasnt having a go at the car either, its just small and dated looking, but Ive seen worse...

Oh, and I did own a 1999 Festiva 5 door, manual, from new. It was actually really good, I had it for 4 years until I traded it in on the current car. It used no fuel, never had a single thing go wrong with it (and I flogged it) and it actually had better paint than I have on my BA which has been resprayed, in parts, 3 times! I did get 16s on the Festy though, those 13s were just too small. At least the Festy didnt have to have driver and passenger airbags as standard, as per the equivalent Barina of the time, because it couldnt pass safety standards without them!!!

I hope Tom Gorman or someone reads this though, because while Viva ad annoys me, I think Fords perpetual crappy advertising and marketing annoys me a lot more!!!

And those Ford salesman ads..... Im sure it made a few Ford salesmen cringe....

Before we call the pot black (and not having a go at u Melz), the Terry-toyie's claim to fame was 31 or 38? storage spaces during quite a visible ad campaign.

Well I'll be brave enough to go against the grain here ;) and no, I haven't seen the Viva ad... but I reckon its a fantastic move by Holden to import the Daewoos and badge them as Holdens. People who buy these cars are not car enthusiasts like most members here.. they are simply interested in cheap motoring.

What better way to combat Toyota's small car brigade than for Holden to release Barina/Viva at substantially less dosh? Brilliant move, Holden! :sm_headba

Cheers

Do you think the Koreans can build the same quality car as Holden?
It might end up tarnishing Holden's name...

It is understandable why Holden is sourcing cars from Korea. When GM purchased the bankrupt Daewoo and made them GM-DAT, Holden was given direct control over the new GM entity. It made sense for Holden as cars from Korea are a lot cheaper than the Opel cars manufactured in Europe. It also made sense for Holden as Daewoo purchase the majority of the Family II four cylinder engines manufactured at Holden's Pt Melbourne engine plant.

But it is also a concern that GM is sourcing cars from Korea. If Daewoo went bankrupt trying to sell cheap econo-boxes, why will Holden succeed where Daewoo failed? Besides the different badges and styling, underneath they are still the same rudimentary vehicles. The press have already stated that the Daewoo manufactured vehicles aren't as good the Opel manufactured vehicles:

Everybody would agree that Korean cars are cheap and nasty. After selling Barina, Astra and Vectra's supplied by Opel, Holden is going down market with the replacement models from GM-DAT. And this is not good news.

Hey I don't even like Japanese cars...

I'm going to be made redundant at work soon... not because my company is struggling... but it's going to outsource its IT work to India....Don't be surprised if we see cars made in India make it to our shores! :(

Don't forget, Japanese cars were poor quality alternatives to Australian made not that long ago... and I'm sure some members here would remember. Err, not me... a bit before my era... but that's what I've read. ;)

Meh I guess its no different when Toyota rebadged VNs-VSs as Lexcens.

Or in the states Pontiac calling Monaros GTOs.

Besides isnt Daewoo apart of GM anyway? just like Mazda is owned by Ford?

I think people confuse Japanese built cars with Korean built cars in terms of build quality far too often.

That is true but do you think they would realistically stop at just the compact, volume seller segment? They'll do what every American owned auto company does, and get dollar signs in the eyes once they see the cost savings to be had from cheap Asian manufacturing. They will invent reasons to produce more models there, anything to justify this glorious new world of cheap labour and even cheaper materials!

Mark my words! : :

Yeah, I don't doubt it Sparkie. Holden's local content on VE is going to be uncomfortably low from all the reports... and other makers will follow suit.

It's a bit like the banks... one bank raises fees, they all act in unison.

Viva adds are terrible BUT
The add for the Lumina? is a classic. The one where everyone on the street has one excluding 1 guy who has one painted on his garage door. Then he rides out on a smoke blowing postie style bike)

The Holden marketing machine is sh*t? Well pardon me.

I may not like the product, but I am not so one-eyed that I can't see that Holden tend to market their product well. That ad is not aimed at us, I'm sure they could care less if we liked it or not. Based on Holden's past marketing, I can only assume that the target audience will quite enjoy the ad.
