Back in the day, DFR was perfunctory. Half who applied would get accepted. There was no system of applying for a particular job and of knowing that job inside out before you applied. There was no rigorous fitness test before you applied.

I Corps-enlisted to RAEME before I signed up in 1982, knew where I was going and what course I was on. Had three weeks' gardening after basic training before my trade course started. Did all the tests in DFR in Adelaide (thanks Capt Bernie Egan), wouldn't have joined otherwise.

When I was at Pucka I once had to do Tech Support for the Armoured Corps Officer Training course (three weeks on Puckapunyal Range in winter). The intake we were looking after were the one Julian Knight came from...and they had some stories...hopefully they're a bit more picky nowadays.

I would like to join the Army Reserves if I can get to the required fitness levels but I understand they do the same basic training as the full timers and from what my best mate has told me of his experiences both in training and overseas (he is currently serving) there is no way I'd make it as I am right now.

Then fix it, you don't have to be superhuman but if you don't have the drive to get the fitness you won't have the drive to do the job. Sounds blunt I know but it is the simple truth.

It all depends on how much you want it, that is the "challenge" of life in the defence force.

Not a fan of the F88 but I have to say that I preferred the M203 over the SLR, what can I say I like options.

I have the drive to get fit generally and have made massive strides but not there just yet but hopefully soon. I only want to do it to make some sort of contribution.

Drive is the hardest bit, keeping working at it and get some help if need be. I did a lot of work on my fitness before going to Kapooka and I am glad I did because not worrying about the physical stuff made the rest a bit easier.

Been a while since I was at Kapooka but if you can run 5km in under 26 mins you are on the right track.

Entry requirements (only just the beginning):

15 Push-ups (sometimes done to a cadence & without resting on the ground)
45 Sit-ups
7.5 Shuttle run score (Beep Test)

After that, it gets hard: forced pack marches; swim tests; obstacle courses etcetera.

Mate if you really want it go for it, treat it as an investment and get a personal trainer, the recruiting website also gives you a training course to follow along to get to the level required.

Don't wait for a what if moment, make it a **** yeh it's mine attitude !

Work hard & drink lots of **** with good mates like you've never had before even as a reservist. Many go on to full time soldiering.

RadScl Laverton 1967...failed my RadMech trade test with 89%, and then advised to "find" an alternative mustering.
Ended up doing 20 years, with the financial benefits.

Currently still serving, i have done 10 years so far, 7 of those years i was in 1RAR and since Corp transferred and am now a photographer.
Done 7 deployments to various places including Afghanistan, Timor, Iraq, Ukraine etc etc.

Loved my time in 1RAR as an infantry soldier, i only really miss the mateship though and when i left the RAR most my mates had moved on anyway which was one of the main reasons i pursued my passion as a photographer.

I failed 'pulse theory' which was Rad 6a/b or 7a/b from memory and posted to Edinburgh as a mech for 12 mths. Did well enough on their ext study program that they 'invited' me back to Laverton for a secong go. Did some study, less drinking p1ss this time around and voila, credits and distinctions. Still not sure how I got through
