Default Official Ford EB Falcon Indy Pace Car For Sale

Historic ‘Indy’ Falcon survives – and is for sale!

A time capsule from the early '90s has somehow survived into 2024 – and you can buy it.

Have you ever wanted to cruise down your local main drag, imagining that it’s 1992 and you’re leading a pack of angry IndyCars restlessly weaving left and right in your rear view mirror, all within the caged confines of the Gold Coast street circuit?

Well now, here’s your chance.

The official pace car for the 1992 and 1993 Gold Coast IndyCar races is up for sale – a “time capsule” 1991 Ford EB Falcon S XR8 with a factory-tuned 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8.

Hidden away for more than three decades, this fully road-registered vehicle remains exactly as it was in its pace car heyday, complete with retro 90s livery and even the amber light bar on the roof.

This was no EB XR8 dressed in some stickers, either. Effectively a concept car intended to showcase Ford Australia’s performance vehicle smarts, the EB pace car appeared at motor shows and was featured in leading motoring magazines of the time.

According to the seller, there’s a full leather interior installed by the Ford Australia Design Centre, suspension retuned by Ford Australia engineer John Mole, while the one-off bodykit was designed by Ford stylist Wayne Draper. The car is a five-speed manual, while there’s also an original Momo steering wheel.

The car has the original roof-mounted light bar and “extremely rare” Compomotive three-piece wheels, while it’s painted in a one-off Pearl White, “paint code FQ”, said the seller.

The seller claims the car was built at the request of then Ford global boss Jac Nasser, while development of the engine – built with hot Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) bits – was spearheaded by Ford’s own engine guru, Bob McWilliam.

In the early ’90s, the car appeared centre-stage at the Sydney Motor Show to highlight the return of the V8 to Ford Australia’s Falcon range, said the seller.

Located on the NSW Central Coast and with 35,000km on the odo, the seller is asking an ambitious $115,000 and describes it, perhaps loftily, as “the most famous and historically significant Ford Falcon of the modern era”.

Now that'd be cool to have sitting in the garage.

High waist bikini is a bit 1990s though, it's back for the 2020s but leaves a lot less to the imagination

Yeah I think $115k is pretty rich... never know tho - he may get it? Although the photo in the link it looks pretty well looked after.

Is there any proof this is genuine? asking for a FRIEND.

Why would you buy it? ego? Investment? not something you would want to use as an everyday car

Looks mad, I like its boxy looks and the halogen rotators on the roof, but the sales pitch sounds a bit realestate agent trying to sell a house in Broadmeadows

As for the car I'll add, same for the taste differences re the most naked on the eye roaming the beach there, different strokes for different blokes, someone will luv that EB roof flashlights and all, good luck to them.

His Mrs told him to get rid of because she wants a 4wd and caravan to do the lap. Amount required $115k for a Dmax and Jayco.
Probably only get enough for a PK Ranger and an old Viscount.

Same, but there's worse things that happen in my day than coming across people wearing those expensive swim outfits

The mighty pace car in all its glory has had a price adjustment down to $89,990!

Big price drop at once for the most important model of the era of something along those lines in the sales pitch

I fail to see that, its also very debatable as to which one might be.
Its also now only 90k, still no IMHO

Each to their own, but id rather buy a genuine EB XR8 as it has more relevance to me and FoA. This thing not so much. It has some kool history and what not ill agree.

I'll start the bidding at $2000 and I'll come up and take it, it just needs the oversize vehicle ahead sign and it's a pilot vehicle, already has the orange rotating beacons

Back in (92-94 I worked for Tyretech in Brissy.

We built the Falken SS Commodore and the following year the GTR again for Falken Australia.

Both those cars raced in the 12 hour at Bathurst with the SS finishing 3rd and the GTR 5th (I think, it was a couple of weeks ago)

The SS was pinched from a tyre dealer out of his showroom (very Sus) and the GTR went on to be used as a pace car for numerous race meeting including the GC Indy cars.

The race engine that was in it at Bathurst was sent back to Falken Japen as ours throw a rod through the side of the block during setup at Lakeside. (thankfully after JR who was helping with the set up took me for a few laps around LS and scared the living sh*t out of me, I didn't believe a standard car could do what he could do with it

A 2nd hand Jap import was fitted and the car sold off.

It ended at the Sunshine Coast for a few years then was sold to Bowdens who onsold it to some Melbourne mob who have spent MEGA dollars so called restoring it.

Their trying to sell it now for stupid money and last I heard they still owned it.

So it's a car with race history, was a test car for the motoring press ( the black car coming over the crest of a hill with all wheels off the ground) and pace car duties and being painted in genuine Falken colors and graphics it was a well known car.

I also love all the different stories bandied about the car but those of us (3) who did it know the truth (also Dan knows)
