I got pulled over by a mobile patrol and breathoed on the way home from the pub last night (0.0) ... as I drove off, I could see in the rear vision mirror they took off after the next car that drove past and pulled them over no more than 350m from where I stopped !
Thought at the time, it was a bit odd they'd jump so quickly again... but makes sense now ! D

It's actually worse than that. If you look at the data ( and the queensland numbers show it most clearly) there was a steady decline in road trauma starting in the late 70's. As mass anti speeding campains came into effect in each state the decline SLOWED or in queensland's case stopped dead for 12 years. More careful examination shows crashes due to excessive speed remained the same while crashes due to inattention rose. Similar numbers are apparent throughout the developed world where similar campains have been implemented.
So not only are they not saving lives and injuries, they have actually increased them. Some of you may point out that deaths have declined, and that is correct, but road trauma has not. The rebalance bewteen fatalities and hospitalisations is due to rigid passenger safety cells and to a lesser extent front end design (pedestrians). |

If you want to reward people for doing the right thing, speed cameras should also take photos of all the cars that pass speed cameras at or below the speed limit. Then each month they choose a random car obeying the limit and give the driver a $1000 prize that was taken out of the fines that camera issued.

Absolutely! Or even a credit voucher for some state government transaction.
But I'd also be happy with a letter saying I'd passed X number of speed cameras and never been detected over the speed limit (itemised, time/dated list attached). |

They had some idea here in WA a few years ago if you didn't get any demerit points for an amount of time (3 years maybe?) you got a much discounted drivers licence fee.

Then when she renewed her license going from Ps to full licence got a discount for 'clean driving history' because the driving without a licence thing didn't count against the criteria for the discount |

Shows how casual they are about it all.
Right Boys, hand out the most fines this week and you'll score a giftcard, she's on me this week. I would have thought a good police dept was doing everything it needed to without giftcard incentives. |

I'll go against the grain and say I don't have a problem with it.
All of us in a job receive some sort of incentive (pay, bonus, etc) to do our job. One of the roles of police is to enforce the law. Those laws include the offence of speeding. Can't see a problem with incentivising the police force to enforce the law by offering a further reward. As long as the crimes were legit. Would you guys complaining about this also suggest that police officers should not get paid (the 'reward' for doing their job)? Would you guys complaining about this also complain if the police force offered a gift card to the officer who arrested the most number of drug offenders? Or child molesterers? Or child pornography holders? Or jaywalkers? Or litterers? Or......

It's open to abuse. And don't say it wouldn't happen. Not every cop is above board. That's why they have the internal investigation unit. |

of course some cops are dodgy, look at all of the cops in Vic who did the fake breath tests to get the numbers up! Theres plenty of proof about that.

Same with procedures/policy that is poorly thought out and onerous to comply with - everyone just skirts around it or does dodgies. Last edited by Franco Cozzo; 09-08-2019 at 10:58 PM. |
