This is the first thing that I thought of when I heard of this bloke.

Who would notice a "genuine" 60 sign missing from their street, then he would have had a perfect defence if they found a genuine sign planted there. Oh well…

Didn't make sense then and it still doesn't now.
It's an interesting word as it actually has both traditional French (jaiole)and Anglo-Norman French (gaole) roots which is where the two origins sprang from. The Oxford English Dictionary still considers both correct for current usage.
