would anyone know if the outside door protectors are held by tape only or some type of clip or bracket

They're taped on.
There are alignment holes in the door under them though, so if you're taking the trims off to get painted, you might want to keep that in mind.

just that you'll have open holes on the outside of your doors for a few days, so keep it out of the rain.

I wanted to remove the trims but i had to put them back on cos of the holes left behind... spewin
