Wont be anything to do with the fuel dude that only really effects new cars (2000 and up) might be the fuel pump.

I agree but your original post stated "Wont be crap fuel that only affects cars 2000 and up". Now that you talking about older cars i can see where you coming from.

In my experience rough running is usually related to plugs and/or leads..... might be worth looking there ;)

just out of interest what brand of fuel was it ? let me guess ...an "independent" ?

"sulphur" smell indicates your car is way out of tune.

definatly.
It could be a few things
you could have picked up shyte from the servo`s tanks (recomend not to fuel up if you see a tanker refueling the servo)
you could have shyte in the bottom of your tank and run the fuel low.
we have had rain recently and it has been known for the servos tanks to collect some water.
then there is the possibility of your car having a dirty fuel filter etc.etc.

yeah it was discounted fuel... but I could smell the sulphur when i was filling it up. It took for ages for it to put 40 litres in it. sulphur smell i have encouted at other servos around town. it has had a major service before i got the car aswell noticed that all filters were changed. I am getting another service at 158000. we got 36 mm the night before i filled it up. I gave it a run down to castlemaine and back again 120 km roughly round trip and used a 1/4 of a tank. the best i got from 1/4 was to halls gap 3 hours or so drive down there. and it never gets into normal area anymore after the breakdown...

Sometimes you get different batches of fuel the octance rating varies so much. Sometimes i get ultimate and its not different to unleaded and sometimes i get ultimate and the difference is huge.
