I don't think that this was set-up. No matter what model, Sportivo or Prodigy, when you dump the go pedal, this thing screams along like a concorde of sorts, it's feral! Good on Toyota for making a fast car. Shame though, it has no properly usable torque, and it is front wheel drive, but if you want to smoke other stockers down the strip, this would be the car, it's damn fast.
I'm not surprised the Commodore V6 lost. It's just a boat that passes rego.

May's Wheels looks at the 2nd tier models of the Aussie 6's.
End summary Mitsubishi -380SX Good - Gutsy engine, serene handling, attractive price Bad - Lack of safety equipment, interior presentation 3.5/5 overall Toyota Aurion Prodigy Good - Drivetrain refinement, strong performance, well equipped and built Bad - Unresolved ride, sodden handling, glitzy interior 3.5/5 overall Holden Commodore Berline Good - Poised involving handling, nice interior, vast space Bad - Slower in a straight line than rivals, lack of gearbox ratios 4/5 Ford Falcon XT (Ford couldn't find Wheels a four-speed Futura) fitted with ESP + ZF Good - Torquey Engine, intelligent transmission, comfy ride Bad - Relatively cramped rear seat, plain interior (come on, it's a bloody XT!) 4/5 The article stated an unconvincing Holden win due to Holden's use of interior space and on-road dynamics, but the fact that the Falcon is a 5 year old model (with the exception of the ZF) shows just how good the BA was when it was released. Pity Wheels don't ever say so. |

I'd take the 380... looks good, great warranty, still Aussie made and has reasonable power. Of course a Falcon would be first choice... Have driven a new V6 Statesman... not a bad drive but the engine noise was terrible... worse than my old ED Fairmont Ghia...

Many people are surprised about how well the 380 drives. A work colleague was recently disappointed to hear he was getting a 380 as his company car as he wanted a VE Commonbore. This disappointed has since disappeared as he likes the way the car drives.
It is a pity that the 380 which was released was only the cut-down version. The MIVEC engine was targeted to have 190+kW. But this engine was cancelled at the end of 2003. That is why the VR-X has the same power as the poverty pack 380. FF |
