I've spent a lot of time driving in these areas and UHF kills 27meg. this is why most Farmers and Bushfire stations use UHF.

27meg on sideband will get some distance, but only if conditions are right.

UHF is ok with the repeaters for distance, take them away they are not much better than the old AM rigs.
Remember repeaters are not every where & I do travel all over Australia to know this.
