If you get a quote back and its outrageous you can hire experts to inspect the car and dispute the repairs. I've seen similar situations, someone gets tapped in the **** and all of a sudden there is a 15k repair bill because the car needed a new bootlid, rear doors, quarter panels, wheel arches and all manner of unrelated crap.
I hope you took photos at the time because I have also seen people take the damaged car, run another car up the **** end or reverse it into a wall and claim it all happened in the original crash. |

I currently dealing with a similar issue.. Only I am fully insured and the other party isn't insured...
I did a claim the same day and took my car to the preferred repairer (who actually does awesome work so happy with that) to get sorted... My car is being fixed regardless and I can only assume they will be chasing the bloke that hit me privately for the repair costs... If my insurer wants to use their repairer, then so be it... they are working for me to keep the inconvenience caused as little as possible.. It serves you right for not at least having 3rd party property... I'm annoyed at old mate who ran into me because not only did he lie to me about having insurance, but I've had the hassle of not having my car for 2 weeks (so far, still waiting to hear when I get it back) as well as having to fight my insurer about the $600 excess.. Lets not mention the Hire car I am also paying for out of my own stinking pocket... If he had insurance, the rental co would have been able to charge his insurance company for the rental... You want the luxury of owning/driving a car on the road, then you should have to at a minimum have 3rd party property... Imagine if it was something really pricey he hit?? Hell my car isn't exactly what you would call expensive but the repairs are, so far, over $10k...

Happened to me when I was twenty. Consider yourself lucky the cops didn't turn up aswell like my effort. Now have a careless driving record from twenty years ago that cops like ve to bring up whenever I'm pulled over. Oh and got a nice fine from the magistrate aswell as paying for all repairs. But hey if you are unemployed then don't worry. Can't repay what you don't have.

You may have this extension on your insurance policy but that is ony if you have car insurance for your own car and it is not with a dodgy cheap insurer - Substitute vehicle Insurance Cover EXTENSION We cover your legal liability, up to the maximum policy limit of $30,000,000 to pay for accidental damage by a registered vehicle being used by you as a substitute vehicle while your vehicle is being serviced, repaired or is not driveable. We give you this benefit only if: • one substitute vehicle is being used at any one time in place of your vehicle, • the substitute vehicle is not already covered under another insurance policy, and the substitute vehicle is not owned by you and you have the owner’s permission to drive it

Bring it to my backyard. There is nothing good quality sticky tape can't fix. Then I will skim it over with the closest matched highlighter.

In my limited experience with smash repairers they don't seem to want the hassle of some one accusing them of gouging an insurance job, nor repairing what seems to be damage from on older accident with the latest one.
Just pay up. It's called a life lesson. You will never drive an uninsured car ever again, will you? |

You could easily end up driving an unregistered and uninsured car and not even be aware of it. May be just drive your own car?

When I was 20 my pride and joy 96 VS Commodore (yeah, I know) got rammed into by a drunk guy. It seemed like he was going about 80km/h and I was only going 15-20km/h (slow for road works). The cars were both totally written off and honestly I was lucky to walk away relatively unhurt - it ruptured the fuel tank.
Of course the DH didn't have insurance and did a runner. In a literal sense. I was in shock but I remember seeing him climb out of his car (broken arm & all) and run off into the distance. Luckily his s**tbox WB ute conveniently had numberplates and his rego notice with name/address in glovebox. He even left his phone and wallet in the car. There were beer cans all over the place too. It took the cops almost three months to track this fella down (they told me they eventually found him camping in a wooded area behind his house after a neighbour or passer-by tipped them off). Some stellar police work there! LOL. Basically after he was caught this guy just avoided the situation completely by declaring bankruptcy. It didn't get him out of the criminal charges but it got him out of his civil debts (i.e. what he owed me). So I was left up ****** creek without a paddle. He ended up getting six months in prison (probation available in 3 of some crap) which I don't feel was long enough but that's how the system works - he would've walked if he didn't have priors. It was a bizarre experience watching the judge empathise with the scumbag too. Just get insurance. |

Third party property is really the minimum. Anything less is like playing Russian roulette, and with the standard of driving seemingly getting worse I won't get behind the wheel now without tpp at least.

Have you checked out websites like itwasntmyfault.com.au or similar. I have not used them but apparently if you are not at fault in an accident and do not have hire car option on your insurance, this company gives you a loan car as close as possible to your current car and then they go after the other party for the fees. Insurance companies will give you the cheapest small car they can get from a regular rental agancy, apparently with these independent companies if you own a luxury SUV, they will try to get you a luxury SUV as your loan car. Sounds too good to be true, but if it's no money out of your pocket it's worth a shot. |

I would feel inclined to say "make insurance compulsory", but that would just give insurance companies the freedom to jack up prices as high as they want, like they do in the UK. I guess there just needs to be more awareness made about just how important insurance is, cause a lot of people seem to just turn a blind eye and hope they don't crash.

as was previously mentioned , if you cant afford insurance (3rd party) , then you shouldnt be on the road . my daily banger falcon costs around $300 per year-3rd party insurance . the premium is about $1k if i need to call on it.
cheap , i'd say , if i ever crash into .....anything - car ,fence, someones pig. i had a mate lose it into someones backyard , cost him a lot more than a barbeque and a bottle of whisky.. any 3rd property party. |

Huge sigh..........
As usual the brain washed arm chair experts come out in full force and offer their opinions most likely based on not much at all. I am currently helping out a relative of mine who is in a very similar situation, he is currently uninsured and was involved in an accident where he rear ended an average condition 2006 Holden Barina. The Barina was deemed a write off and the insurance company began their chase for amounts owing etc. I said to my relative you have obviously made a stupid mistake and will have to pay a certain amount regardless of what the outcome is. The insurance company representing the owner of the damaged Barina were seeking just under $5000 to recoup all associated costs etc. They sent out associated reports and also various advertisements of similar Barinas in mint condition with extremely low KM for sale by registered car dealers in order to justify the costs in which they were demanding. Long story short after a quick 20 min email sent to the seeking insurance company questioning some things in regards to the matter, they ended up responding only seeking a total amount of $3800 this time around. $1200 less than the original requested amount. The point is even though you are in the wrong and will ultimately have to pay for your silly actions, you still have the right to be not taken advantage of and if you feel this is the case question it and stand up for yourself. Good luck and all the best |

I'd rather be "brainwashed" than drive around without insurance. Risking a massive amount of money and the chance of inconveniencing another person doesn't sit well with me.
To each their own. |
