I just hit them quick with a wire wheel, wax and grease remover, then masked everything and painted. Proper way is to take the caliper off but i couldnt be bothered, just masked everything real well, came out alright:

There's no need to take the calipers off unless you want it to be perfect from every angle.

Make sure you use a sealer (clearcoat) after the main coat. I've done mine about 3 coats of normal paint and did about 3 coats of clearcoat and it's still there good as gold.
That was about 2 years ago. |

Plastic bag to mask off brake disc etc (slide it under the caliper arm). Depending on how dirty they are, clean with a wire wheel, and then wipe with wax and grease remover, and then spray in your favourite colour (chevy orange by the sounds of it). No need for clear coat, but you can if you want.

By the way, remove the pads, nothing looks worse than the back of the pads painted.

And the wax thing, is not wax, it is a product designed to remove the wax and oil like substances like the natural oils from your hands. The more serious oils etc will be removed by cleaning first, Im pretty sure prepwashes are just to remove hand oils etc and the wax or silicone from things like wet and dry sandpaper.
It helps the paint stick to the surface. some people paint cars without using prepsol for example, and it works, and other times there are blemishes or worse due to the trace amounts of wax or oils left behind. Hardly worth the risk for a few bucks and a minute or two extra very light work (for calipers that is, takes a tad longer to prepwash a whole car). Edit: Dont walk away before hitting submit. Damn ninjas Last edited by fmc351; 10-05-2011 at 01:51 AM. |

Should be able to get this in a 500 ml pack too. A fair bit more than needed for 4 calipers.
I think you can get other brands in pressure packs too. Just ask for "wax and grease remover" or "prepwash". Check SuperCheap or similar type places for the pressure packs, auto paint stores for the liquid in cans or bottles. its not to clean the calipers, but it is to wipe them clean after youve cleaned them. Just use a cloth and wipe it over the whole surface, allow it to dry (its quick as it evaporates fast). If you get a tin or bottle of liquid, dont be lazy and leave the lid off, it will as I said evaporate. |

Or you could just hit the caliper with mag wheel cleaner (phosphoric acid) or coca cola from time to time to make it a nice shiny silver colour. If its a standard size caliper then painting it only tells people 'hey I have taxicab brake calipers on my car' anyway. Those charcoal coloured rims of yours look pretty good though... M

NR1KEY, if you dont mind, could you please keep a log of the tools and steps you took (with pics if possible)...and update it here in the thread? Im interested in painting my callipers too and would just like to see how its done. The youtube video posted above was pretty helpful, as well as the links...but the more info the better is my opinion

I've had the paint for a few weeks now, but haven't got around to doing it haha. I think I need some car stands to make it easier...unless people have another idea how to 2 wheels at once.
