Resale getting silly

I dont know if anyone remembers my BA XR6? I recently sold it. I know you dont get money back for mods, and thats fair enough. But this is what it had:

Black
Sunroof
Premium audio
Rear electric windows
5 speed manual, with brand new T5Z Mal Wood gearbox
Rip Shifter
Textralia twin plate clutch
4.11s and 4 pinion LSD
4495 Pacemaker headers (HPC)
XR6T cat back with two stainless resonators and twin stainless tips
3 inch Magnaflow cat
KPM camshafts
Underdrives
CAPA flashbox and custom tunes (race tune, performance tune and factory tune)
G&D airbox and K&N pod
Custom air intake pipe
BPT thermostat
Brand new full set PBR brakes
Brand new Koni adjustable shockers
30mm Whiteline swaybar
4 almost brand new Dunlop SP 3000s (two months old)
7 months rego.

All of that went for $14K. And I was lucky to get that I think. I reckon the guy who bought it got a good deal because even though it was a 2003 car, there was almost nothing left on it that wasnt more than 12 months old and there was NOTHING he would have to replace for a long time...

ironically, my mate just sold his black 2003 XR6, 100% stock, for exactly the same price! You NEVER get more for a modded car, actually a lot of the time you get less because people think it's been 'tampered' with.. it sucks big time though i must admit. I sold my 347ci EB Ghia for $4000 not so long ago.. biggest mistake ever!

That's true, if you mod a car you're better off keeping the parts and returning it to standard and selling the parts off separately, because mods have the opposite effect on resale..

Agreed i have a mate hunting down a BA XR6T and we are looking for one with No Mods or any signs of being modded.. not interisted in something that has had the best of it flogged out.

funny part is, it will be going for CAI, Valve springs & a custom tune about a week after he gets it.

i'm of two minds when it comes to modded cars.. one part of me thinks twice because it's going to have had its butt handed to it, but on the other hand if they've been built tough/modded well, they should be able to handle it for quite some time without any real drama. Lol @ modding straight away, sounds like me.

i would never buy a modded car personally - irrespective of how well it has been maintained - too high risk

anyway - i am licking my chops at the thought of buying a nice second hand vehicle on my return to Melbourne in a cpl of months.......

i'm not too phased with the resale, it's a great car and I plan on hanging onto it for the next few years

If discounting is happening already I think its fair to say the FG is doomed for failure...As bad as the perception of the AU was, I can't recall them being discounted so early on....It's a pity as it's won the hearts of the media and seems to get rave reviews.

That is excessively cheap, considering an employee cannot even buy one for that price, he should grab it because even at 28k that is a huge saving from $39,990.

Have you seen the December employee pricing? A Ford mate sent me an email.

There were some incredible prices, a dealer told me they were getting a lot of Ford people who had taken redundancies picking up some bargains as they are still eligible for the employee pricing. A good ploy by Ford to get some money back and sell some cars.

If private buyers are getting ripper deals, it would be granted the employees are getting some too. Holden are even letting employees buy up to four cars for family and friends.

Ford don't like sensitive material like that getting out. If Joe Blow buys an XR6 for 37k and an employee buys it for 12k then Joe will feel ripped off.

Dealers forsake margins as they pursue car sales

CAR dealers are making as little as $1 profit on each car they sell as they try to lure buyers and clear stockpiles.

Several dealers contacted by The Age yesterday had noticed a jump in the number of buyers visiting showrooms last weekend, with most keen to claim a new-car bargain before a rash of January 1 price rises.

Car sales have weakened recently, falling 22.2 per cent in November and 11.4 per cent in October. December is traditionally a slower month, while January marks the time when many dealerships start their first cycle of discounting for the year.

However, some yards are selling cars any way they can.

One Canberra-based Ford dealership last weekend was selling the Falcon for $1 more than the dealer's cost to get the car into the showroom.

Bryan Lockwood, a sales consultant at Belconnen-based John McGrath Ford, said this saved some customers about $9500 on the list price of a $46,990 Falcon G6E, making it cheaper than even a list price base-model XT.

Mr Lockwood said the cheap Falcon offer, which ended on the weekend, had drawn bargain-hunters through his dealership's doors as expected.

He said the sale had also cleared the dealer's stocks of unsold Falcons that dated back to the first half of the year.

Ford is believed to have about 4000 unsold Falcons languishing in the no-man's land between its Broadmeadows factory and showrooms. Some Ford dealers are even offering $2000 worth of free fuel with some already heavily discounted cars.

Toyota, meanwhile, has said it is trying to clear about 40,000 cars. One Melbourne dealership is offering drive-away pricing on a V6-powered Aurion AT-X family car that is normally priced from $34,990, shedding more than $4000.

A spokeswoman for Holden said recent sales campaigns had reduced its stock of unsold cars down to "a manageable level". Some Holden dealers are offering a mid-specification Commodore SV6, which normally costs from $40,790, at more than $6000 off the showroom price, making it cheaper than the factory recommended price for a base-model Omega.

Santo Amoddio, managing director of vehicle price-watch index Glass's Guide, said anyone buying a new car now should plan on owning it for at least three years to get the most return for their money.

"Cars lose most of their value in depreciation in the first year or two, so to sell it in the short term is not very good," Mr Amoddio said. "Three years-plus is the ideal time to hang on to a car."

He also warned buyers to be wary of even cheaper new cars that were built last year, which some dealers were still selling this year. When it came to trade-in time, that extra year in age would hurt the car's resale value, he said.

Mr Amoddio said he expected conditions to get even better for buyers next year, with some good incentives likely in six to eight months' time.

"We'll see what happens with interest rates," he said. "If they fall any further, then we could see cars sold on zero per cent interest rates like in the US and the UK. We could even see manufacturers offer a two-for-one deal like they have overseas. There's some strange things going on out there."

I highly doubt it. It's been told here what the employee pricing is and it's very close to what the above poster said.

No-one in their right mind would pay 39k for a new XR6 anyway.

Back in '03, I sold my manual 95 EF XR6 with 154,000k's for $13K

Just about to put my manual 03 BA XR6/premium with 143,000k's on the market and from what you guys are saying, doesn't even look like i'll get $13K for it. What do you guys think is a realistic price?
