Post VFacts Figures for 2016.

"Toyota's HiLux is the unprecedented king of the new-car market as SUV sales continue to close the gap on traditional passenger cars in a record 2016 vehicle sales year.
In a year of shake-ups in the automotive industry, 1.178 million vehicles were sold and the HiLux pushed long-standing winner – and stablemate – Corolla into second spot.
In fact, three utes from Thailand made it into the top-10 best sellers, including the Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton at fourth and ninth respectively.
In the brand ladder, Toyota retained number one spot followed by Mazda, Hyundai, Holden and Ford.
Sales for the year were up 2.0 per cent on 1.155 million sold in the calendar year of 2015, marking the seventh year of consecutive million-plus sales, according to official VFACTS sales figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).
FCAI chief executive Tony Weber said the data showed a continuing trend to SUVs as the market entered a significant transition.
"While buyer demand for traditional passenger cars remains healthy, it is clear consumers are gradually transitioning into other segments," he said.
Toyota claimed the top position with sales up 1.6 per cent on 2015 at a record 206,610 units. It is Toyota's 14th successive year as market leader and the fifth time it has breached the 200,000 threshold.
Second-placed Mazda also had a record of 118,217 units, up 3.7 per cent, to win over third-placed Hyundai with 101,555 sales.
Holden recorded 94,308 sales for the year, and closing out the top five was Ford on 81,207 sales.
SUV sales for the year finished at 441,017, a rise of eight per cent on 2015, closing in on passenger cars with 481,257, which declined 5.7 per cent over 2015.
The biggest upset has been the spectacular interest in*utes.
A notable stand out in the SUV market was the upper large segment – which includes the Toyota LandCruiser, Lexus LX and Nissan Patrol – that increased sales by 27.1 per cent.
In contrast, the upper large passenger car segment made the biggest fall, down 23.3 per cent on 2015 as buyers either left the sector or switched to SUVs.
Australians also showed their sensitivity to petrol prices, abandoning diesels, electric vehicles and LPG as petrol prices slumped through the year.
Private passenger car buyers ignored LPG (down 65.8 per cent in sales compared with 2015) and diesel (down 29.5 per cent), while electric vehicles including plug-in models fell 69 per cent. The fall in LPG sales was also attributed to Ford Australia ending its local model range that included some LPG-fuelled models.
But the biggest upset has been the spectacular interest in utes.
Though the HiLux has been a strong seller on the market – picking up monthly sales wins on two occasions – the main reason for its popularity has been its transformation from a workhorse to a family-friendly vehicle.
Sales of 4WD utes rose 9.6 per cent last year, eclipsing the 8.1 per cent rise in their 2WD counterparts.
The HiLux sales were helped by a major facelift and a new drivetrain in 2016 that came at a time when interest was waning in traditional cars.
Though the ute is our best seller, it has actually performed better in previous years. It sold 42,104 in 2016 but had sales of close to 48,000 in 2008.
Holden's sales slide continued in 2016 but Ford reversed its previous decline despite the end of the locally-built Falcon and Territory.
Its success was based mainly on the Ranger ute and its SUV spin-off, the Everest. Ford posted 81,207 sales, up 6.5 per cent on 2015.
The Ranger clocked 36,934 sales – a record for the model – which was just 5170 units behind HiLux.
Mazda's second place was attributed to the CX-5 – the nation's top-selling SUV – though the previous popularity of its Mazda3 fell away, down 6.6 per cent to 36,107 units for fifth place behind Ranger.
Hyundai's growth slowed in 2016 while Kia jumped into the top 10 for the first time, its sales rocketing 26.5 per cent to a record 42,668.
Honda fell out of 10th place this year, even though it edged up 1.8 per cent to 40,838 sales."

I know there were many knockers of Ford marketing here over the last few years but it's got to be said, Fords strategy is starting to work. In the year of dropping Falcon/Territory, they managed to increase market share.

Fords former fierce rival Holden hung on to the Commodore for dear life, it's still on a downwards spiral and it's best seller will be replaced by a hatchback only import with no V8. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ford leap ahead of Holden in the sales race this year...

I tend to agree. I do wonder though what the effect of having no Territory replacement until the very end of the year will do to their sales tally this year. Falcon was down to very low numbers in the end and to some extent Mondeo has stepped up but to not have a contender in the medium SUV class could be problem.

I think this years sales will be very interesting and most likely going to set the tone for Fords position in the market now that the factory had closed and the dust has settled.

Watch For :

1. Ranger to continue to build volume.

2. Mustang sales to increase with plant capacity being redirected to our market.

3. Escape to more than double Kuga Volume based on pricing and added technology.

I think Fords volume will increase before Edge arrives.

TV Ads in the 2010's aren't the only thing that sell cars.

The internet does now, TV Ads are very expensive too.

How many people base their purchase on a TV Ad ?

Smart people do their research, others buy on price point and Brand Image not TV Commercials.

Since we're on the subject of TV ads...

Focus ad from 2015:

Mondeo ad from about 3 months ago:

I haven't seen any Fiesta ads recently I must admit. Then there's all the various ads from the lady in blue. We can question the 'quality' of these ads, but they're ads nonetheless, and as said previously, who bases their car purchase solely on TV ads?

stig 3754..Ford tv ads are far and few between. Frequent ads for Ranger and sales are great. Someone sees an ad on tv and does further research, internet etc...The interest in buying a car has to start somewhere...

Perhaps where you're from, but they're dime a dozen over here. As said before, advertising doesn't only exist on TV.

And a further point re: Ranger ads. Over here they've been hammering us over the last few months with Everest and Kuga ads but they haven't exactly produced the sales numbers that the Ranger produces have they?

But how many people see a car on TV, then do further research because they liked what they saw.

Everybody's heard of Red Bull,. but they still pour buckets of money into advertising

6208. Interestingly, in Nov Mustang sold 389 and Dec 614. From memory, there was an extra 2,000 allocated to Aus that started to arrive around Dec so supply probably helped.

http://performancedrive.com.au/austr...revealed-0515/

Ultimately for Ford, it's the profit per vehicle thats probably of higher importance rather than sales count. I'd bet the Ranger is making Ford a ****eload more than the Commodore is for Holden for vehicle.

A little off topic but out of interest, here's Ford Malaysia's pricelist -
https://www.ford.com.my/vehicle-price-list

Ranger's (and Hilux) are all over the place there as they are comparatively cheap -

Wildtrack auto is rm$139,838, exchange rate is roughly 3:1 so $46,612, in Aus it's $61,790 (according to Redbook). That's a lot of fat for Ford Aus even if you add in say a generous $2K extra for shipping.

@DFB FGXR6 - Re the Territory, its estimated it will cost them about 7,000 sales and I believe Ford are introducing the 2wd Everest below $50K which should help stem the loss until the new gen Edge arrives.

Exactly.

What piqued my interest in the new Mondeo initially was YouTube reviews of the US Fusion. Then it was the leaked pics, prices and specs on this forum, then multiple visits to the dealer and the deal was done. Didn't watch a single TV ad for the Mondeo in that time.

People don't watch commercial TV anymore. Get with the times.

Models for different markets have different specs. The Malaysian Ranger may not have equipment our version does.

So by my calculations Ford has sold around 8,000 Mustangs since release and can expect supply of 4,000...........why people are waiting 12 months for a car is beyond me.

I've been in the Malaysian Ranger (old model) at a Ford dealer in KL and as far as I could tell, it's got the same spec, definitely has all the big ticket items.

Ford has sold 6,329 Mustangs since launch - most of them in 2016.

Cheers
