Holden VE Commodore being dropped from a crane

This is a new Holden Commodore being dropped from a crane, speed when it hits is around 95 to 100klm's per hour, the vehicle has sustained some damage prior by being dropped on its side.

I'd say because they could, looks like it was already a write off to begin with (note the lamp-post shaped styling on the driver's side back door)

Interesting to see the A-pillars still held their shape after that drop.

Yeah, because part of a normal family weekend is to be picked up by a crane and then dropped...

We used to do it all the time, yet we were stuck with the XF Wagon for 13 years...

It looks like a Commodore that Holden donated.

They donate new Commodores to road safety things, so fire crews can cut it open etc. They also donate new cars to TAFEs for apprentices to work on. These cars can not be registered in most cases, so it's a fitting end.

A lot to learn from tests like this too I would imagine.

Seems to hold together fairly well.

All new holdens should be dropped from cranes :p

My next door neighbour at my wrecking yard in Adelaide is an automotive engineer that does crash testing for ARB and the like. We set up a trolley to fit the car on with tracks - a "big block" XE 250 carby motor with a winch drum set up that pulls the trolley (with car attached) into a 4ft thick concrete bunker. He can hit speeds of 110kms/hr in a very short time with the 250 singing at 5500rpm.

Was probably for the Australasian & World Road Crash Rescue Competion held in NZ last month, Holden provide most of the vehicles.

PAH if it was theyd prob use an FPV and then go onto pronounce that the HSV would in there expert opinions survive much better....or something along those lines lol

The drop time on the video looks close to 3 secs or so, so the estimated speed of 90-100km/h(25-28m/s) is consistent with that.

This is not the first time a VE Commodore was dropped from a crane. I remember a similar test being done 3 years ago where a red HSV Commodore was dropped as part of practice organised by a fire and rescue service in some state (can't remember which state exactly) for crash scenes

It's no wonder holden have so many cars to 'donate'. Alot of holden drivers are useless (partly due to being so many more of them)

You should see some of the "new" cars which have been donated to TAFEs across Australia for apprentices.

When I did mine at Chisholm in Frankston back in 2003, there was a new VP and some others I can't recall. Amazing to see those cars so mint, after all the years. Nice glimpse in automotive history. I'm sure there are some Falcons around too.

Yeah when i started an auto electric course i was shocked at some of the cars TAFE would recieve. was a 300c. a corvette, and a couple other normal cars. which would be fixed by tafe, but had to be crushed anyway
