anyone using <20% tints on there cars?
How much hassles have you had from the coppers? If you apply them and get busted, what is the ramifications, canary + fine, which equates to what in $$$, having never had one, what happens then, you have to get a RWC, or front up to vicroads/RTA? really want to go limo tint, but would appreciate feedback on people that have tryied and been busted for darker that ADR standards. Out of interest, why is it that you have to have 35% light into a car, sorry I can't see why that is from a saftey point of view if you can see out ok aka dark nights etc etc. from the little that I know are not tints oneway, i read the vicroads pdf, and they state or even recommend not having tints as the glass comes with a % in it allready... states very clearly that 35% is OK!! appreciate anyone that gives some feedback.. No I am not a rebel... dont want the hassles. |

tint % is mainly for safety for viewing INTO the vehicle i think (as well as out of ) specially if say the cops pull you over and can't see if that's a gun or a hotdog your holding.
Dunno about other states, but 'least here in perth, just flash them your cert of compliance and they get nicked pretty fast. Solace can on request give a cert of compliance (or similar named), specially for their midnight express tint. Tho granted our cops are pretty good i think. |

In vic, seems to be a real effort to reduce mod'ed cars... ask anyone that goes to chapel st, they just bust people left/right and centre... sometimes I think cops have nothing better to do...
you should have to break a road law, before they can pull you over, and inspect your car. yeah I see your point about seeing in for weopons etc etc... makes more sense... so from what your saying you can apply for a complince, wonder how I go about this in vic. hmmmm ponder... cheers for some feedabck also anyone tried/pushed there luck in vic re: original post, or are we all to scared as we live in a police state.... |

i live in ballarat, and the cop presence seems nonexistant (originally hailing from Echuca which is notorious for being a cop town) , but my ex-roomate had a 20% tint on his SV5000, and he managed to get harassed for it, but that was only cos they couldn't see his P-plate. i really think it depends on where u are and the cop who gets u... so if ur gonna be doing chappies then u will probably be harassed for having such a dark tint.
If the cop so chose, they could put you off the road for it... hell they can put a straight-from-the-factory car off the road for having their wiper tank less than half full of water! (mates dad was a cop, they CAN do it). if my mate was still living in Echuca i have no doubt that his car'd be off the road right now. They are always pulling people over and doing roadworthys. Anyway i think you just have to be careful not to any stupid sh|t in ur ute to avoid attracting their attention. (and pray they aren't just bored and decide to put u off the road cos they can)

My xh ute has the back window and quarter windows tinted at 5%,and the door windows are 15%,been like that for 4 or 5 years and never been hassled by the cops (I'm in vic).BUT,they're crap when backing a trailer, but great if someone is behind you with their highbeams on,because you really can't see out or in.

35% is the darkest legal, next darkest is 20% then 5%. It is for the reason of seein in, but with 20% it is hard to see out at night, especially ped's and riders. So I suggest 35% on front windows and 20 on rear side and rear. This is legal in Vic BTW.

I was going to go %20 tint, and was worried about the same thing (hassels from police) but the window tint guy said this realy isnt the issue here, but what he did say is if there is a serious accident and someone dies, there could be big hassels then. Insurance will be void, and you could go to jail etc etc....Only if they feel that the tint played a part on the accident...
I also want to say, %20 at night is almost so hard to see out of it realy shouldnt be alloud at all... just my opinion, looks cool though..... casey |

I've got 20%, no hassles with vision at night. I've been pulled several times, and the only complaint about not seeing my p-plate is 'cause it wasn't up haha! The rest of the time I just give the window a wipe with my hand and show them the plate is up. Its fairly easy to get away with.

In victoria the law is the darkest legal tint is 35%
BUT if you have 2 rear view mirrors (1 on each front door) then you can BY LAW from the "B" piller back you can paint all the rest of the windows. On my white car i have 35% front doors 20% back doors 5% back window on my Blue car i have a 20% tint strip on the front windscreen 8 inch down then 20% front doors 5% rest of the windows on my yellow car it is 20% front doors 5% rest Keep yourself out of trouble get 35% on the front doors and maybe 20% or even 18% on the rest .. when you get the tint ask them to get it all black .. If you have a look around you will see diffrent colours of tint some are a grey some are a greeny colour some are black some are even silver |

Cheers Guys,
Really appreciate it... I was thinking going the limo tint which was 8%.... but might go 20% now...... i'd think about it, and maybe do the "legal" 35%. I have seen some 8% stuff via pics, and from the look of it it hardly looks tinted from the inside looking out, but you can not see in thats for sure... ;) Would having the front windows say 35% and the rest 8% just look plain "nuffy" but? I mean I even say 35% front 2 doors and 20% back window, would'nt you notice the difference in colour.. One other question, is 1/2 a noob question, with my ute having a rear demister "rails" in the back window, if I apply the tint and F&%( it up, if I have to remove it, will it pull the rails of with it as well.. anyone recommend THE BEST way to clean the windows before applying the tint, I will re:read russel_w's car cleaning thread again, (I take it he is a pro detailer)? there can never be enough BLACK! |

i owned a vehicle which had been tinted in 5% all round,at night you had to drive with the windows down (no matter how cold it was)otherwise you just couldnt see very much, in the rear view you'd see vague headlights but not judge how far back they were etc, i've had a few cars in 20 and its heaps better, no real problems at night in my opinion. never ever been hassles for tint, even in the car with 5 all round(perth)

Also the utility is classed as a commercial vehicle ... and the rear window can be as dark as you like legally ... well that's the case in NSW ... I have 5% on my rear window.
But i have 20% on my sides on the AU ute ... it can get prety dark at night ... and reverse can be a bit of a pain in the dark (especially with a trailer on or horse float) .. but I am used to it.

Do the rules on tint depend on the age of the car?
Someone told me cars older than a certain age can have as dark tint as they want.. is it true or is he full of sh!7 as usual? Would love 5% on the '67 merc don't drive it at night anyway.. purely a sunday cruiser sorta thing. |

Ummm ... I remember reading a little while ago it had something to do with early-1990's being a changeover point. But don't quote me on it.

on my ED i had 2 layers of window tint. was VERY dark inside. but illegal. ive heard of issues coming up with insurance if you windows are too dark... cause if you say "i couldnt see the car/whatever" they will blame it on your tint.

when they check the tint they will only check the front windows because they are ones you need to see out of not the back ones

I'm looking at tinting my window's as well, I wanted it legal, but now that I know it can be 35% on the front and then 20% on the rest, I think I'll check that out.

since you've already got the tint it doesn't really matter now, but i recommend that you go for a drive in someone's car with 20% at night, cos during the day it's fine.. but it can be more of a pain at night than you would think.
also, when you get it done try n post some pics, reckon it'd look great :voldar02:
