They've come from nowhere to this in only a couple of years. Anybody drive one or purchased one?

I know Doc, I'm taking the urine over one of my previous threads where people were saying no one wants cheap cars so manufacturers are all pulling out of the segment
They are pulling out indeed but our Chinese 'friends' have seen a big opportunity the big players can't. |

There is a house around the corner from me that has 2 or 3.
They park them out the front all the time. Cheap, decent features, known brand, doesn't look bad, cute colours etc. If course they are selling well. Having said that the MG dealership in Chullora was vacant a few days ago. Wondering what happened there? Sent from my SM-G973F using Tapatalk

They're not real MGs so they don't count for anything...

That said its not necessarily a bad thing for modern days buyers i reckon considering there buying them for everyday transport, dont get me wrong i like the old stuff myself, fwiw a mate a couple of years back managed to secure a new Norton, fabulous looking thing and looks wise retained a bit of the old Commandos presence etc sadly on its maiden voyage it ended up on the back of a truck with a lecky problem which was somewhat ironic. Off topic sorry but your post reminded me of it.

This is great though, I hope MG does well and soon do equally well with electric cars. Then 5 years later when the rest of the car is junked I can get a cheap pair of motors, controllers and knock a few sets of batteries together and find enough good cells so I can start electrifying classics on the cheap. |

If they are selling they must be doing something right.
Most people just want cheap transport, since that is the primarily function of a car, if they get 5 years out of it most are happy. Cant blame them, factor in a tight economy etc and the days of your neighbor bringing home the new Calais or Fairmont Ghia are long gone.

Yep, have driven a HS model (the smallish SUV, CX5 segment size I'd say).
It was comfy, quiet, had all the mod cons you would expect and seemed to be built fairly well. And can be had for thirty grand. Unsure why the OP is surprised they are everywhere.

I have a couple of real MG's, one nearly 60 years old and the other 50, and in a club. There are a number of club members now with these Chinese MG's, these car people are very happy with them, so far. One couple has had theirs for probably a couple of years now, still very happy. Haven't heard any not so good words about them yet. Apparently they are designed in Longbridge UK at the old MG Rover factory.

MG3 sounds similar to MGB.
Every time I see LGBGT, I think MGBGT. Haha. LGBGT V Ate/Eight sounds like a messed up orgy... |

I simply wouldn't buy one because of where it was made.
If it came from Thailand, Mexico, the Phillipines or where ever I would otherwise consider it. Yes I still buy plenty of other cr#p made in China, but that's because EVERYTHING is. Honestly, if I went to Bunnings to buy a drill and there was an Australian made one for $150 and a made in China one for $100, I'd buy the Australian made one.

I’m a bit like that with groceries. Chinese canned fruit? No thanks!
If the government would encourage refits of cars as done with military equipment, it could support a lot of local industry. |
