Default Year 10 scrapheap challenge

Here are two of the constructions my year 10 students came up with for the Scrapheap Challenge unit. Each group was given a chassis (75x50x900 RHS) and a starter motor and a set of drive gears to make a machine that could drive. They could use any of the scrap/parts they could find around the workshop to complete their job...

This one will be ready to go in the next couple of days. We tried it our last week but the weld holding the gear on the starter shaft broke instantly...

This one carried a student at least 30 metres before the starter motor moved out of alignment with the drive gear/wheel...

More soon...

They would have a pretty fair ground speed by the look of the gearing, starters spin pretty quick and 1:1 gearing looks high

With the flex plates as drive wheels off the 1:1 gear set it should be quite fast. We will find out probably today...

Unfortunately, this machine was a dud. I suspect the gearing was far to high. The battery was fully charged but it could barely move. It needed a push to get it rolling...
