Lightbulb Real, online racing idea.

Hi guys and gals!

I've had this idea for a long time now & really, the choke points are;
1) internet speed
2) the costs

Basically... Imagine logging into an 'online game' where you can control an actual car, which is using servo arms & such to steer the car, etc?

To begin with, I'd start off with low-cost cars, because no doubt there will be crashes. Getting used to real physics through a computer would take time to get used too.

But then as people form teams, I can imagine the teams upgrading the car, collectively.

This idea would take years for me to develop by myself. But I want to do it for some reason lol.

What do you all think? Good idea, or just - a mess?

P.s. if this is in the wrong forum, I apologise. Move if necessary.

Let me see if I'm understanding you......

I can log into an app or some such that actually controls a real life car? What if this car kills someone?

I wouldn't touch this with a barge pole as a developer or a user.

Lol woops! I meant to specify, the cars would be in a controlled racetrack - totally enclosed so nobody can get hurt from the outside.

Oh, that's right it's school holidays and kids are at home bored so they troll internet forums

This is the strangest thing I have read in a long time. Not sure how this would work, so someone will have a racetrack and people from computers will control the cars..WTF?

So who will own the cars?? Who will fuel and service the cars?? Who will pay for the cars when they crash and get written off??

Who would actually have the $$ to pay for this?? It would coast more to do this than actually driving the real race car on a real race track.

Hey now... If I was a troll, I'd be funny at least.

The race idea is strange, I know. I have various strange ideas, and it seems as though some are for it, some are against it.

And in response to other replies - indeed - it would cost a lot of money to get set-up. Eventually though - racers would have to pay for their own damages - or damages caused to others - like they do now (sponsors & such), only put their lives at risk.

Maybe the thrill of instant death is just more entertaining then car drones racing.

Hmm.. Ok. Back to the drawing board I guess.

Why not just get iRacing, set up a good wheel / pedal set up, go bananas and buy a hydraulic rig for it, and bam! you have what you're after.

It's a cool idea but even before mentioning the huge costs, there would be so much input lag it would be a better option to just play a sim racer.

Basically just a remote control car...

Probable the next logical step. Instead of a joystick remote control unit you do it from a computer / lap top / screen..

Kind of already happening with drone racing etc.

The logistics of full size remote control car racing is a bit of a nightmare though.

Why not apply the concept to current remote control car racing by placing a camera forward facing camera in the car and racing it based on the view on a monitor.

People like me would purposely play to smash cars. Like NASCAR, it's not fun until there's an 'accident'. You'd go broke pretty quick I'd say.

You'd need an insurance system to pay for damages. Who would possibly play if you could potentially cause tens of thousands of damages in one accident?

I'd pay maybe a one off race fee insurance of like $50-100. AND I'd still purposely smash.

It would be a heap of fun, but if my driving on Forza/GT/etc. is any indication, I'd go through a few cars a session. ;)

In a similar vein, Nvidea have been talking about a autonomous racing car series.

Nice! I hope they do it right. Looks quite awesome!

I'll still go ahead with my idea - one day.

Also, does not necessarily have to be cars. Could be a range of vehicles, with a range of simulations. Many plans to write up & research.
