Default China unveils sophisticated stealth fighter aircraft

ZHUHAI/BEIJING (Reuters) - China unveiled a sophisticated new stealth fighter jet at an air show on Tuesday, a show of muscle during a visit by U.S. President Barack Obama for an Asia-Pacific summit.

China hopes the much-anticipated J-31 stealth aircraft, developed by the Aviation Industry Corp of China (Avic), the country's top aircraft maker, will compete with U.S.-made hardware in export markets.

The twin-engine fighter jet was unveiled at the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition in the southern city of Zhuhai, a biennial event at which China shows off its military technology, a Reuters witness said.

The J-31 conducted a demonstration but was not put on display afterwards although a mock-up version was on show.

An Avic spokesman declined to comment on any orders for the aircraft.

"We were told not to do any promotion for the plane," said the spokesman, Fu Mingyao. He did not elaborate.

There are slated to be at least two more J-31 demonstrations at the show, Avic officials said.

China hopes the J-31 will compete with the U.S.-made F-35 stealth aircraft as China works to strengthen its standing as an arms producer, according to China military watchers and state media reports.

"Experts predict that the J-31 will make rapid inroads in the international market in the future, and will undoubtedly steal the limelight from the F-35," the ruling Communist Party's People's Daily reported on its website in August 2013.

It said the aircraft would be particularly attractive to countries that are cut off from U.S. arms exports.

The J-31 is about the same size as the F-35, the U.S. Department of Defense said in a report this year.

Stealth aircraft are key for China's air force to evolve from a mostly territorial air force to developing the ability to carry out both offensive and defensive operations, the Pentagon said in the report about developments in China's military.

The J-31 is China's second domestically produced stealth fighter. Analysts say development of stealth aircraft enable China to better project its power as it takes on a more assertive stance in the East China and South China seas.

President Xi Jinping has been pushing to strengthen China's 2.3 million-strong armed forces.

Obama, attending an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum meeting in Beijing, is due to meet Xi on Wednesday.

(story corrects description of air show in third paragraph to "biennial")

It's pretty amusing though, considering the XR8 next year will be reborn with the same spec engine as the FG GT, could you imagine being a HSV owner forking out all that money on a brand new GTS, then pulling up to the lights next to a FH XR8 and then sitting side by side all the way to 100 and beyond
Even more embarrasing would be the lower spec variants of the VF in HSV's stable getting whopped by a factory XR8.

Why, let everyone else pay for development then copy them. Good financial sense

Looks so similar to an F-22 Raptor.....Didnt they hack the blueprints for it years ago?

What the U.S should do is design something that has epic design faults and let them steal the master plan.

....but the faults only show at mach 3 above 50,000 feet, then all debris gets blasted into Saturn`s Ice Belt.

Give the Chinese a/f another 10 years & they will be probably pretty close quality wise. Their engines are not quite there yet. F -22 with another 10 years r&d will comfortably keep its advantage though.

cheers, Maka

True that. Although we assembled all but the first 4 of our F/A-18A Hornets here and make some parts for the JSF program.

Even our gas sales to China will go south soon I think if reports are correct.

Does this mean we could perhaps rezone and develop the Dandenong Valley Park-lands into Glen Waverly airport?

I see no usable land in Balwyn nor rail in Doncaster. And we really need to encourage foreign investment of these enemy fighter jets into the Glen Waverly region. Otherwise the lack of Chinese national security will stagnate foreign investment growth which according to Joe Hockey is the last thing we want to be doing with the mining boom coming to an end.

What's more important. National security or the current property boom? I would've thought the answer here's obvious. We need foreign investment, that way the oldies cash in big off foreigners and in turn inflate the market, forcing their grandchildren to supplement the debt of foreigners for the ones who don't have trusts. It's great honestly.

Stolen F35 plans with some adaptations. Hopefully it will be built with the same crappy metal parts that they sell to the west and fall apart in-flight.

The Chinese have churned out a lot of military hardware over the past 24 months. This is becoming another arms race and leads to one thing. The yanks are investing in new generation high tech robotics, where as the Chinese will use manpower (they have a lot of that).

I'm not kidding when I say the yanks have silent black triangles that defy gravity (...with colored lights all around them lol).

I'm starting to believe we've had gravity disruption since the nazi days (it can be traced back to tesla before aliens)

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0325232140.htm

What a waste of money and infastructure. 1 flying triangle would **** up an entire airforce. **** robots!
