Today whilst driving the power steering got progressivly heavier to almost undrivable. When I stopped and looked red oil leaking profusely out from under the car. A resevoir in the engine bay is empty but handbook doesnt say what the resevoir is. Cap says ATF only so originally I was assuming it was the PS resevoir but now not 100% sure. Any Ideas plz. Not a Ford a BMW.

Thanks Blueford260
All sorted, used up RACQ we pay for and never use, had it towed to Mr Fixit man but I went to Supercheap had a look and bought ATF, put it in and drove 500mtrs, lots of groaning and whirring noises so parked it and called RACQ.

No, theyre not the same. You'll also find some cars like Hondas and Beemers use specific fluid in their systems.

Some of those on the shelf said used in PS systems It went through so fast it wont hurt it as whatever split or came adrift it was substantial. There was nothing in the handbook about what type or how much should go in and as there was so much noise I parked it and left it for the towie and now the mechanic.

YES they are fundamentally the SAME, as in they are the same "class" of hydraulic fluids.
HOWEVER there are MANY different formulations, it is definitely NOT "one bottle suits all." You must use the correct fluid specified for your car. Furthermore you will find that in many cars it is DIFFERENT fluid for the tranny & PS. And whilst some formulations may be similar, you have no way of knowing, so best to stick with the correct one.

Hi. Most PS systems can use ATF including falcons up to around AU. The additive package that makes one ATF different from another tends to change the way that the clutches in autos slip when changing gears (shift quality) and at the temperature that the trans normally runs at. None of this affects most power steering systems which is why the recommendation is usually for the same trans fluid as what the autos are filled with, that is early falcons (mid 60's to mid 80's) type F, mid 80's to mid EA use dex3, 4 speed EA on used various "power steering fluids" as these were cheaper than 4 speed auto fluid. Cheers MD

I've been using a Valvoline, FG Steering pump oil for my 2010 FG. Basically empty the reserviour and top up. Avoid holding hardlock, the PS Pump is pumping no where.
