You'd have to ask what were the transport inspectors doing, as these problems didn't occur overnight.

If Shell/oil companies are struggling to stay viable then we really do need a new system. Can't keep patching it forever.

The Shell servo in Emerald Vic is completely closed......No fuel AT ALL and not even an attendent. Doors locked and tagged out bowsers. This is a country town at about 25klms away from nearest other servo's.
The tow trucks will be busy this week. And my missus EF just stopped running on petrol after a new fuel pump a few months ago and she ran out of LPG other day. Had to get a tow home. Cant do anything until the Shell opens again! Last edited by GASWAGON; 18-02-2014 at 06:39 PM. |

McAleese will axe about 540 jobs including truck drivers and workshop staff from Cootes Transport after deciding to halve the size of the beleaguered fuel-haulage business in the wake of what it described as relentless government scrutiny.
The transport company will also sell about half of the trucks and trailers in Cootes’ fleet after losing contracts with Shell and BP, and withdrawing from supplying 7-Eleven in several states. McAleese said the jobs would be gradually lost over the next six months as the contracts ended. The company has set aside about $13 million for redundancies at Cootes this financial year. Advertisement About 1250 of McAleese’s 2000-strong workforce nationwide are employed at Cootes, which the company bought about two years ago from private equity firm CHAMP. The job losses will primarily include truck drivers but also workshop and clerical staff. Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/business/540-j...#ixzz2tfc2CCAy

The maintenance problem probably stems from this. You have to have a very good constitution to stay in trucking......... probably with a degree of insanity and a liking as for getting continually kicked in the gonads as well. |

Plus Australia doesn't have the rail infrastructure to consistently and reliably deliver on a regular basis.

Is it as bad as the media are hyping out there? I got caught out last time. Right now I'm away for work and the car is parked in a garage. Wondering if I'm going to get caught short when I jump in the car Friday night and try to do the 3.5hr commute home.

Theres plenty of petrol around. After all, theres less petrol tankers driving around, so plenty of fuel for others. Just drive straight to the terminal gates.

We have fuel depots on the line, the fuel was stored in tanks and trucked elsewhere from the depots.

Adelaide for instance only keeps a few weeks supply on hand. Wouldnt take more than a hiccup to screw Adelaide. Cut of the oil and you cant imagine that 1 million people will be surviving on the veges grown in their 100 square metre back yards. Not a fan of those dooms day preppers, but everyone should be keeping a few jerry cans of fuel lying around at home. Last edited by bobthebilda; 20-02-2014 at 11:01 PM. |

Just looking at it soberly: yes, the picture you paint is correct. It'll slowly dwindle and become more expensive. The manufacturers that offered power by sustainable local fuel (gas) have been sent packing. All of you driving diesel cars will find that's reserved for essential services and trucks. The Federal government has no energy security policy (probably doesn't even know what that means) and a PM who thinks it'll all just go on forever. Meanwhile, car use in the major cities has pretty-much stabilised since 2005, more and more young people are opting out of getting driving licences and public transport use is bursting at the seams. The Federal government's response: stop funding urban rail projects and build more roads. No doubt the likes of Cootes will be allowed to keep running with faulty trucks because governments are afraid of having fuel cut off and the voter backlash from that. Between all this and local manufacturing collapsing I'm perpetually grateful we're blessed with good government in this country. |
