A MAN created a fake 60km/h speed limit sign and then photographed it to use as evidence in court to avoid a speeding fine, a court has heard.

To avoid a simple speeding fine....... He could have easily plead guilty and had the matter dismissed if his record was OK.

I just noticed that in both articles they spell the word gaol "jail" is this the way we have to spell it these days because if it is I want to go and give my 2nd class teacher a huge slap.
Man she used to give me a flogging because I always used to spell it the American way.

Gaol is still the correct Australian spelling but we have the uneducated and TV addicted frequently spelling it wrong and as we must worship the US it gets spelled incorrectly more often than not. I spell it gaol and correct those that spell it jail

I went through primary school in the 70's and was never taught to spell it "gaol".
I only learnt that spelling on an excursion to the Old Melbourne Gaol.
Didn't make sense then and it still doesn't now.

your teachers were probably all American TV addicts . unfortunately our teachers don't always get it right.

as for the guy in the story he is a moron and deserves gaol time he fabricated evidence to pervert the course of justice and the courts don't take that lightly. a well known judge went to gaol for it over a speeding fine . if someone has a creative method for beating a fine without committing fraud good luck to them but committing a criminal offence to beat a speeding fine is just plain stupid

It's an interesting word as it actually has both traditional French (jaiole)and Anglo-Norman French (gaole) roots which is where the two origins sprang from. The Oxford English Dictionary still considers both correct for current usage.

Who would notice a "genuine" 60 sign missing from their street, then he would have had a perfect defence if they found a genuine sign planted there. Oh well…

Generally American spelling makes sense. Most English spelling is silly because its roughly 30% french origin owing to the Norman Conquest of 1066.

Imajin how much time kud be saved in skools if speling woz lojikal and we didnt have silly werdz like 'knife' or 'cheque' or 'phonetic'. Hell, it wud even make our immigrants mor produktiv!

I knew of a guy who made a heap of fake multi nova cameras with a flash and all, then put them out in random places. It got in the papers. Not quite the same as faking a sign to fool a court. I think it's the "fooling a court" thing which has got this guy undone.
