ok i was doin bout 20km/h in a school zone and i tapped this dudes right hand mirror with my own mirror
There is a hairline crack in the actual Mirror part thats it... i donno if it happened because of me or it was already there... I pulled over and i went 2 see if it was alrite and he said seemd ok so i was about to drive off. Then out of no where he comes back and says there is damage... A crack in the mirror OK he wants 190$ for mirror + 40$ for labour... The car is a BF falcon its black so no paint is needed. Can i get a cheaper price and did i actually do the damage? ALSO can i just replace the ACTUAL mirror without the whole plastic part.

As for pricing I'd be surprised if you did get it much cheaper than that, although I may be proved wrong on that one

I would have asked him how he knew how much a mirror is.
If you caused the damage then it's your responsibility to make it right. As you can't prove either way, cough up the money or tell him you'll organise the supply and fitment at a dealer of his choice and pay them. |

i think thats a very good price. I recently had to get a new front indicator (edxr6 style) They charged $157.90. And thats only plastic, where this has glass, motors and wires etc.

I do have to wonder if he told you the cost of the replacement at the time or was it later on (after getting a quote). If it was before, how on earth did he know that, I would call his bluff personally and offer to pay half (if he told you at the scene that is).
Maybe I am just cynical but anyone that knows up front the cost of replacing something then it was most likely broken and he already had a quote.

Seems a bit odd that he knew how much it was worth, if anything I'd say he's done the damage himself, quoted it up, and by hitting him you've given him the perfect oppotunity to get out of paying for it himself.
Problem is, you'll never prove it. Quote one up from Ford, get it on paper from the dealership, offer it to him, and see how you go.

I no i cant prove it but my theory was that when he first said nothin happened got back to his car and then thought here we go free mirror then told me their was a crack in it but yea what can i do ill pay for it. I will go to ford tomorrow or a mechanic shop get some quotes see who will give me cheapest prices. Does Anyone on ford forums have a mechanic workshop in south east melbourne ^^ or can somebody recommend me to one.

go to the ford part centre on brown roads and ask for a quote from there, after head towards other local ford dealer until you find one that is cheap and book his car in without being doget out. Also have a invoice of the price printed to prove on what it cost

Replace the broken lense only if thats all it is.
Get a good one from a wrecker or panel shop or something; they arent that expensive unless he wants you to replace the whole mirror assy, wiring, shell/cover. |

Hey everyone has said it can't be proven.....I'll tell you how to try and prove it.
Ask him to see his proof of loss, that is the quote from the panel beater or mechanic to prove the amount you should pay, This is not an unreasonable request. Now the tricky part, look on the quote to see the date he got the quote, if it predates the date of your accident, he got the quote before you ever hit it. In that case out of a sense of goodwill I would offer 50% of the amount out of goodwill because you acknowledge you actually did hit it and may have contributed to the damage, but not all of it.

This is assuming he actually got a written quote rather than rang up BEFORE the accident and didn't bother checking the dates before presenting it to you. If he didn't then I suppose you would have to pay up. |

If he hit the other dude, then all the other dude has to do is go through his insurance, and he'll have his mirror fixed, at no cost to him, and then sikora's gonna get chased up for the money. He could end up with an at fault excess claim, and all because he listened to some half-wit on these forums with NFI what he's talking about. Get the guy to get 3 quotes, give them to you, and then give him the cash for the cheapest one. If I was the other dude, you'd be paying for a whole new mirror, cos I'd be going through my insurance, and seeing my mate who's a panel beater. So thank your lucky stars that this bloke isn't making life hard for you, cos it's a hell of a lot easier to go through your insurance company than it is to follow up on some dude you've never met! |

By Law you only need to provide one quote along with a letter of demand. From that quote you could have an independant assesor check it over and make a comparison quote. P.S. an assessor can be a qualified panel beater that agrees to give a written report of what he thinks is unreasonable in the quote with his reasons why and then you can challenge it.

You need to grow up the insurer doesn't care for $150 its a no win situation.
And as has been said it can't be proven unless liability has been admitted wtih witness.

And yes - that is the right price for a genuine ford mirror new. Try an XR headlight - they're $383. |

Yes you can source just the mirror glass.
Im getting one made up now for $20 (flat fee) Just go to any glass / shower screen place with a paper cut out of the mirror and they will make it up. I would be trying to do this. No point replacing a whole unit if just the glass is damaged. If the guy can't see the common sense in only replacing the bit you possibly damaged than tell him to sue you.... or make an insurance claim. They will probably not bother. |

Too right on that one. I just had the side of my car resprayed and a new ford mirror fitted to my car as some drunk sheila decided she would head out in her car and back up the side of the ef. Then her husband was telling her to just take off... Big mistake.
Anyways that cost them 1040 bucks. So there it is. Maybe you could get a newie for him or something. Could have been a nice expensive one off a mercedes or such with an indicator in it!

How much of the other guy's time are you going to waste while you fart-a** around getting a glass mirror made up that may-or-may-not fit, and asking him to get multiple quotes?
You caused him grief, not the other way around. Pay him the perfectly reasonable $230 he's asking for. Under the circumstances, that is not excessive. Get the issue behind you, and him, and take a bit more care driving in future. Last edited by DirtyHarry; 21-05-2007 at 09:58 PM. Reason: Spelling |

Fix the broken mirros lense by itself.
He'll probbaly only keep the whoile mirro for a spare or sell it off on ebay if you replace the lot. If there is any damage to the rest of the mirro then i would replace the whole ting, but if he's sure its just the lense then just replace the lense. If you can get away with it for $50, then do it. But if you can get out of it that cheap, then buy him a slab of beer or something similar for the time he has to use to get it fixed. |
