Hi all,
Just thought I'd share my experience with Timing Belt and Water pump replacement on my 2016 MD Mondeo TDCi. Quoted from Jefferson Ford $495 for water pump + $195 for Timing Belt (don't come as a kit) + Postage so over $700 just for parts alone. That prompted me to try for aftermarket components. Contacted local Bursons they gave me a part # for a kit from DAYCO all up $600, when I looked up the Part # I don't believe it would fit the MD Mondeo I've been bitten with DAYCO items before..... thermostat housing comes to mind. Still not convinced this was the cheapest I did some deep dive google searching and got a Bosch part # 1 987 946 960. To which I purchased from eBay seller: Parts4Car in Lithuania for GBP 142.22 with posting to my door equated to AUD $310.80. I bought the car 6 months ago with 165k on the clock and knew it hadn't had timing belt replaced. Car has 172k on it and good timing as the water pump showed early signs of leaking. Good job! I was in a hurry so bought a Dayco kit through Autobarn. Price wasn't terrible at about $430, and it arrived in a couple of days.
The OE pumps seem to be garbage, with leaks and loose impellers common well before the timing belt is due. Disappointing. Other things to look out for at those miles: the thermostat. It can develop a leak around the actuator seal, and more worrying, they can just blow apart! The end of the housing where the top radiator hose attaches can just blow off, which means you're calling a tow truck. Also at those miles the EGR cooler housing can crack. This starts as a slight coolant leak, at least giving you time to get the part in, unlike the thermostat. You can get just the plastic housing and cooler on eBay for about $250. A replacement EGR valve from Ford is about $1400! |

Thanks AlanM after trying Bursons never considered Autobarn. Mine had a slight leak from thermostat housing when I bought it so replaced that and did the EGR cooling housing at the same time after researching their common problems. For the most part the MD Mondeos seem to be a pretty good car just some of the composite parts are rubbish and can be quite expensive especially for someone who isn't mechanically minded. Next on my list is wheel nuts and Trans pan (composite one on the front of trans) as it has a minor weep. Worst thing is it was replaced 20k ago by Ford according to service paperwork from previous owner so going to wait till trans is due in another 10k to remove and reseal with blue-max. The guy on youtube video I linked in original post is an excellent source of information as he has uploaded a lot videos for repair of 'Mk5 Mondeos' he is a mechanic for a taxi company in the UK so if there's an issue he's probably seen it before.

Another good channel on YouTube for info on servicing the transmissions and valve bodies is "Yep That'sit" he's a kiwi transmission specialist. They are a good car. A great long distance highway car, very quiet and comfortable, and Sydney to Melbourne takes about 3/4 of a tank. If Ford dealers weren't such crooks they'd be an even better car.
