Perhaps they were half way through a sentence and got distracted?

"A digger has gouged a whole lot of concrete out of the overpass"

I agree BTW.. I see 2-3 obvious mistakes a week in online news reports / articles.

Would be lucky to find that many in a month when I was reading the paper every day.

On the Mitchell Freeway??? That's a first as far as I am aware. Talk about chaos, I bet he, err, got a talking to about that one.

Don't drivers use the road atlases anymore?

Looks like he ruined the trailer as well

Yes it pays to know your bridge heights,
but it is a lot easier to get caught out than one might think, especially if you swap trucks and trailer equipment around, and truck turn table heights vary, also road crews can resurface and put an inch or two down ......... "that's funny I went under there with the same load yesterday, bang'.

That's funny I went under there with a 25 ton box and had 2 inches to spare, today goes under with an mt container .... bang.

Understandable but I think drivers need to be more accountable for this.
Not only have they caused damage (cost) but they have inconvenienced people for hours because of what can only be described as negligence.

No argument from me there, and i dont know the circumstances of this fellows bridge hit and hes screwed the pooch, but , i think we are all capable of having a an oh **** moment where we have made a severe blunder that may have been caused by a simple error of judgement or lapse of memory,
if you expect every truck driver to never ever ever make a fopar, i think that is a big ask.
The powers that be know where the danger areas are, and could reduce the possibility of road chaos by simply making bridge heights uniform and at a safe height, so they must share some of the responsibility.

From a non truck driver here, how is it that a truck driver doesn't know the height of the load they are carrying? I would have thought you'd have to know the height before you drive off just so you know which bridges you can and cannot go under.

well this is true, on the other hand truck drivers are human and make mistakes, and when in traffic you can get side tracked dealing with navigation and traffic and there are more things to keep your mind busy in a truck than a car, and I think we are all guilty of a moments inattention at some stage .
we used to have a lot of bridge hits for years near the wharf precinct at dynon Rd footscray , it is a heavily used truck route,
the bridge hits did not stop until the powers that be finally decided they should scallop a bit of the road out giving it a reasonable bridge clearance.

Same with motoring journalists.

In the 80s, car magazines were impeccable with the accuracy of their spelling & grammar.

Now it's gone to the dogs - the writing, and the writers. Even in print.

And don't get me started about online articles....

I might be wrong, but it looks as though the "whole" created indicates that this structural member of the bridge is in fact hollow. Is that possible?

It certainly appears that way. I thought these concrete bridge spans would be solid.

span is a ratio of depth to width not weight.
the bridge would be made up of box sections, flat and wide concrete tubes joined together then the road deck would be poured locking it together.
1:20 span to depth as a rule of thumb. for every 20 units of span needs 1 unit of depth.
A solid bridge would suffer unnecessary material cost, and self weight issues.
have a look here, at the cross section of one of the greatest bridges to date!
