Surely thats an error, as wife got done doing similar recently and it cost $185.
Or penalty due is an accumulation of previous fines outstanding? |

It's because it's a business vehicle. The person driving can claim that they were in fact the driver and the fine will be reduced to the normal amount. I think it's to stop drivers avoiding the fines/points and doing the whole "we aren't sure who was driving, lots of people drove the car that day".

At that level of "speed" it's revenue raising whatever the reason.

They say don't steal, the government doesnt like competition. But this is on a whole new level. We might as well be printing stacks of 100 dollar notes to get even with these ******.

You know what i dont understand.. Receiving a fine and demerit points for the same driving offence, thats 2 punishments for 1 offence.
I know very well how hard it is when you lose your licence and now more than ever its very easy to lose it, 4 offences in 3 years can see it gone for 6 months, thats a long time relying on other people and gone are the days where you can get away with driving while suspended ( not that i condone such a thing ) repeat offenders if theyre lucky get community service, if theyre not its jail and that makes me think that surely demerit points are enough, therefore i can only see 1 logical reason for the fine..... |

What I think is not fair is businesses that need to use the roads 100 times more then the average driver, have different rules for fines, but the same rules for points. People make mistakes and the more time you're on the road, the more mistakes you'll make no matter how careful you are. My opinion only, but I think the points system for businesses needs a review... |

Hence why a lot of workplaces with "pool cars" (like my wife's work) make each person sign a key log whenever they take & return keys for the shared cars. The log also includes the time in & out, and is witnessed by the admin on duty at the time.

Mate got exactly the same and freaked..
As mentioned above, it is for a company vehicle if you can't nominate a driver. Send back nominated driver details and it drops to normal $185 or so.

Yeah, steal cars, sell dope, snatch handbags, just don't speed while your trying to get away and you'll be fine, just a slap on wrist.
It's nothing to do with raising money though, safety mate, those 8 extra klms...lethal!!! |

If it was really about safety, the fines for <15kmh over would be small without any demerit points, but once you get clocked more than ~20kmh over it's open season.
But of course the lives of people doing 90 in an 80 would be at risk so that will never happen. |

And as long as there are people, they will continually repeatedly break the road rules... even unwittingly/unwillingly.

Edit: To put that into perspective, you can drive right across America at 10MPH over the limit and not receive a second glance. Once you break that you may start to attract attention. In Europe it is not unusual to be 40km/h+ over the limit and be overtaken by police. |

I counter and say that as more people obey the rules and drive slower, the more fines and enforcement methods will increase. other wise revenue from fines will go down (havnt seen that happen - ever) If speeding fines make people slow down how come each year the govt "earns" (bad word for it) more in fine revenue. All governments are reducing the fine thresholds (speeding brackets and the grace amount) Lets not forget that cars and their owners aren't responsible for speeding, drivers are. Should the owner of a knife be held accountable for murder if they cant identify the person that used the knife. and finally, lets not forget that less than 7% of road fatalities are as a result of excessive speed (including travelling under the limit but too fast for the conditions). then you have jerks like these that bash a poor bloke at a night club (kick and stomp him) and get ................. $220 and $330 fines respectively. Is it just me that thinks there is something seriously out of wack http://www.dailyadvertiser.com.au/st...d-on-teenager/ now i need to go and pay that Melbourn parking fine i just got because my meter expired at 6:57pm and the free parking began at 7pm (yep i got the fine at 6:58) Guess I have to brush up on my Honest and reasonable mistake of fact defence again |

Otherwise everyone would just say, wow can't remember who was driving. How about someone does a hit and run on your pride and joy, you get the rego and the cops go around and the registered owner declares that he was not driving and does not know who was, so no one is responsible for your damage. So by your logic no one would be held responsible for the damage to your vehicle. Wonder what your response would be then??

All I can say is I'm rather ashamed of our childish theif leaders who don't know any better way of making money than finding ways to legally steal money from its people.
Laws like these are put in place for safety yet seems in the US, UK, Europe, a blind eye is turned to low end speeding because it's pretty much proven this is a small cause of accidents. They are practical about it and don't just rip their own people off simply because they can. I'd even say because you are monitoring your speed so tightly you won't pay attention to real safe driving, you are two busy constantly monitoring the speedo needle. They pay for TV adverts on speeding to phsycologically brainwash drivers into thinking they deserve to be fined. Do we ever see such adverts for all the types of wreckless driving we see everyday, no way, it's probably not good business and it's more costly to police. Who gives a toss about real safety, we just want money. This is just another form of corruption in a nice wrapper as far as I'm concerned. Call ourselves a developed country, depends on what our definition of that is. |

While SA normally leads the way in excessive fine amounts, I got one recently for over 500 (company car) which dropped to just over 200 when I signed a stat dec and copped the points.

Assuming the limit is reasonable for that stretch of road. Virtually all the NSW RTA's fixed camera sites had 85th percentile speeds well above the speed limit. It suggests the problem may not necessarily be with the drivers, but with the people setting the limits.

Is a $3k fine at all proportional to the severity of the offence? Remember, some companies get less for dumping waste into rivers etc. IMO, we've lost the plot.

It scares me how easily we all roll over and accept ever more draconian policies. Are you horrified at the police state the US has become (eg. excessive force, false charges, harassment, etc)? There are plenty within the police service who hope we go down that same path.... |
