Default When did you go for your P's

Thought it would be good to find out when people went for their license (straight away or not for a while) and how did they learnt (e.g the old man)?

Cheers, Anthony

P.S What did you drive? Also, auto or manual?

P.P.S We're talking P's, for now... (poll is for P's only, hopefully, somehow, a poll for L's can eventually be made)

Took Dad out for one lesson, then drove my instructor to my test. Passed on the first go, speeding and a compression lock up to boot lol.

Bought a car and drive around the streets by myself,no one to teach me so that was the only way for me to learn.
Drove to the R.T.A and passed second time so i was happy considering i had no instructor lessons at all.

daddy taught me once in his commodore, then he lost his licence so i learnt in his mates XB GT(auto), a Brocky V8 VL(manual) and finally a ford mondeo. 11 lessons with the instructor, then a VORT, 96% and im a licenced driver.

Got my L's when I was 16 1/2 due to being an apparent illegal alien lol. I was born in NSW and a NSW birth extract was not good enough, took me 6 months to get a new certificate from NSW :

Got the L's and learnt in first a JB Holden Camira SL/X (If you can drive one of them you can drive anything lol) and a nice XD Falcon before moving on to a VR Acclaim and eventually my first car, a VL wagon :

Got my P's the day after my birthday, passed on the first go and then went cruising :

Before anyone says anything, I know there are a lot of Holden's there. I was a late learner lol.

got my L's a litle late, about 6 months after I turned 16......went for P's 12 days after 18th birthday..

Did my learning in a manual '94 Ford Telstar (instructor guy), plus the family EB Falcon (auto) and NC Fairlane (auto). The Falcon was later downtraded to a manual Daewoo Lanos, and then uptraded to an ED Falcon, so drove both of those as well.

Went for my P's in the ED, so had an auto license only on my P's......no big deal though.

My birthday was a saturday, so QLD transport wasn't open till monday after that. Got my L's on the monday, messed around for 12 months

Got my P's as soon as I could, had 3 lessons with an instructor so he could tell me what to look for, then I went for them and I have my manual license

The freedom of having your P's sure is great! Spending over $100 a week in fuel, though :(

I sat the theory and practical all on the same day all within 1 hour and passed with a full open license and avoided the L's and P's thingy by just a week or so, i was 15 then.

After that i lost it and had to re sit the theory but since i had done it before the L's and P's i got the full license back again. Then paid for an international license, drove on that in Aussie for 6 years then paid $15 and sat theory to get aussie open license & motorcycle license.

First time behind the wheel, at age of 5. It went so well that next time behind the wheel I was 14! I almost ran over my Dads legs the first time!

Funny thing is Im a bit of a car nut, and yet it took me over 7 months to go for my L's. And I only did that because NSW were bringing in the 3 year P's thing they do now! Passed L's first time, and P's. Way too easy!!!

Went for my Ps (and got them) on my 18th birthday although not really by choice. I was going to wait until about a week later because if I failed it wouldn't make for a good present. But I passed so all was good.

I learnt with my mates dad since he had a manual car. Oh and he was a driving instructor lol. Did about a years worth of lessons (1 per week). I did drive with my old man a couple of times but we only had automatic cars in the family and I wanted a manual license.

Ended up with an auto (302 powered XA coupe) for my first car, and in fact have never owned a manual to this day 12 years and 6 cars later. Not deliberately, thats just the way it has worked out. I'm getting a manual for my next car, whatever that may be.

got my p's about 3 weeks after i was 17 in my parents old manual diesel nissan patrol. great slow old car, cant stall, hill starts were brilliant in it, and the three point turn took 5 turns because it was so big. wanted to go for my p's straight away but the driving instructor said i wasnt good enough. went for a couple of drives with my dad, took the test, passed with flying colours, and the driving instructor was sitting right behind us. couldnt help but laugh at him when i showed him the p plates. silly old bugger!!
1st car was an auto xb 302 fairmont, great car to learn in, and shock horror it was a v8 and im still alive!!

Then got a job... so yeah.. needed the transport

I got my L's pretty much as soon as i turned 16 but then the excitement of it all soon wore off. Only just got my P's last year at 19 beacause my L's we're going to expire. Learnt in a 1993 daihatsu charade manual. Best thing about waiting so long though was being able to save for a new car, mates are all still in shitboxes now and jealous of the bf...

I remember in New Zealand you could get a full unrestricted car license at 15 years of age...Not sure if things have tightened up since.

I turned 15 in December 1977 and had my full license in May 1978 :
